++Update: Sony's new PlayStation motion control device will not apparently be called 'Gem' now as was widely reported this morning. The confusion arose after EA head honcho John Riccitiello apparently inadvertently appeared to spill the beans at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference yesterday.
Riccitiello said: "In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace," as reported on Softpedia.
Sony have finally broken cover with SCEA Director of Communications, Patrick Seybold now going on record on Kotaku to say Gem was "an early code name for the product," We haven't announced final name at this point."
So maybe not Gem then. But you can still amuse yourselves in the comments field below providing some witty, insightful or just plain silly suggestions on what Sony's motion-controlled magic wand might be called (Hm, magic wand's not so bad).
Hmmmm could have come up with something more inspiring, but then again What the hell is Project Natal supposed to mean......uuuuuhh! Sorry Mr Moloenenieuxaunwhatsurnameagain?? don't mean to take the p**s.
How aboouut???
Wonder stick Rod of Power Flaming Sword of Doom Granny Basher Rhythm Stick 6 Inches of throbbing battery operated Black power
Well that's not the worst name I've heard something console related called (*looks at Nintendo* - why didn't they call it the Revolution? It damn well started one). Oh well. Cue the rush of comments from both sides...
to me it doesn't sound that bad-could be much worse. When the Wii was announced everyone was like 'What??' it was originally called the nintendo revolution and at first people preferred that name. I think the name will eventually stick.
I reckon Gem is a better name that Wii, simply because there's less comedy value in it
That said, I'd like to know the justification for the name. The prototype had big blobs on the ends - are those going to be shaped to resemble precious stones? Are they going to be transparent or shiny? Is it going to cost an absolute fortune?
Another nice family-friendly name. Damn you casual market, I want manly names like 'the bug' and 'Jaguar' back! The only place for manly names are the gaming mice from Razer such as 'deathadder', 'copperhead' and black 'mamba'.
Gesture Enhanced Movement Guided Environment Motion
I think it's ok, it's short and easy to remember! When Nintendo anounced Wii everyone took the p**s! (pun intended) but it has become accepted now. Gem certainly more universal than 'Project Natal' lets hope that is just the project name.
Natal will have to be the final name I reckon; it is too well known as that to be changed now. It would only end up confusing and alienating its target audience if it was changed randomy.
Yeah, as stupid as Gem is, I still think Wii is the most retarded name for a console. At least the Gem is optional. You buy a wii, you're stuck with something that will always remind you of taking a p**s.

I disagree. The name 'Wii' had definitely got people talking about it. This is always a good thing.
@ Xavier WB, It doesn't have to be the final name. The Nintendo Revolution was referred to as the Revolution for over a year. Then when it was announced (April 06 i think it was) that it was to be called the Wii, my stomach turned. I don't like the name even now, and I'm a HUGE Nintendo fanboy! (GUILTY)
"PROJECT" Natal is exactly what it says on the tin, its the project name. Just like the Ultra 64(N64), the Nintendo Dolphin(Gamecube) and Xbox Next(360).
@ Suivatam109PS3, I think it was that arrogant CU*T Kaz. God I hate his guts.
Did anyone at any point think that "Gem" might just be its development name? Just like Natal is? MS have said that their final product might not be called natal but that is its development name.

Actually, I just read that it is the name of the development interface for it - much like the Wii one is called Revolution, so you're probably right.
I reckon they are going to be called Dildos. It's going to be awesome playing with the motion sensing dildo next spring! The motion sensing dildo is tracked by the playstation eye- It just makes sense people haha.
Could you please explain why 'Natal' is 'pretentious'? You do realise it is the portuguese word for Christmas don't you? No didn't think so, guess that makes you the pretenious one doesn't it.
