US Air Force buys 2,200 PS3s

...to power super computers, not play LittleBigPlanet
The US Air Force has slapped Sony with an order for 2,200 PS3s, but not because they're the world's biggest Sack Boy fans.

Apparently the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y is looking into using the Cell Processors inside Sony's console to boost the military's high-performance computing systems because, according to techy people, it's the most cost-effective way to do so.

"With respect to cell processors, a single 1U server configured with two 3.2-GHz cell processors can cost up to $8k, while two Sony PS3s cost approximately $600," explain said techy people.

"Though a single 3.2-GHz cell processor can deliver over 200 GFLOPS, whereas the Sony PS3 configuration delivers approximately 150 GFLOPS, the approximately tenfold cost difference per GFLOP makes the Sony PS3 the only viable technology for HPC applications," they say in an Air Force document.

So if you want to build a super computer in your house, just Sellotape together a couple of thousand PS3s. Simples.

ATI 5870's performance is over 2TFlops, would have been a much cheaper solution.

The Cell is dead in the water, IBM have scrapped plans to continue R&D on it.

Its just a load of Sony hype, they probably got those at half nothing for the publicity.

That's not true, I bought one back in September and I've bought 2 PSN games AND played 3 whole demos on it. It's a gaming beast in this house... Confused

It does play blu rays quite nicely too.

Good point! According to http://seekingalpha.com/article/20861-isuppli-s-teardown-of-the-ps3-largest-loss-per-unit-in-history they could be losing up to $300 per unit (this was at launch, so they will obviously have streamlined manufacturing - but also consider the drop in price as well). Considering this is 2200 units that won't have games purchased for them, they could potentially lose about Ł400000 that they will never recoup from software sales.

I bet they are most unhappy about this, indeed.

Did I say I was hoping so? No, you cretin. I just find it astonishing, and I'd be very p**sed off if I was losing that amount of money from the sale of my goods.

By the way, on your own recommendation from your "PS3 game of the 2009" thread I actually bought and loved Flower. I've got no issues, so seriously, what is your problem?

I notice you purposefully cut out the disclaimer in my post that stated they were launch losses and the values were likely to be different - but could potentially be that much. How mature.

I really don't understand why you're being so weirdly defensive. It was a statement of awe, not an attack on Sony - I have a PS3 ffs, why would I want them to fail and have support for my console terminated?!

You're really being quite pathetic in trying to start an argument for no reason.

Not necessarily a job in media, as it is a desirable industry to work in for a lot of people and as such competition is rife. Though you don’t need a media degree to work in it either, most employers just see a degree (almost any) as a marker that someone can knuckle down and do some work. Unless you’re working in a specific industry, engineering, medicine etc., then the actual degree doesn’t matter, merely the grade.

Mine wasn’t a media studies degree, I originally did a joint honours of business economics with media, the economics part, thankfully, does not get used these days!

well when I was in school I thought ooo being a film director would be sweet, so i went with that, when i finished college with my A levels it came to my knowledge that alot of actual film schools operate their new income of students on degree value so i couldn't get in to the LFS that way! so 3 awesome years of drink and sex followed by a degree is the way forward lol!

oh and yeah they film DR who and that spin off series here, i dunno sh*t about holby city though

I can relate to your sentiment on the matter; still, as someone already pointed out, for many potential employers it's often more important that someone has shown the fortitude to undertake and successfully complete a higher education. Experience and character are the two other main pillars in the hiring equation from what I've witnessed.

Also, as someone pointed out, certain fields require specific degrees in order to qualify for (i.e. architecture, law, medicine). While officially many positions state they desire certain types of degrees some fields are easier to enter in spite of not having the stated degree.

I do sometimes feel wistful at not using my degrees in a directly related field, yet not so much these days as I have a good job and I like to think I'm acquiring useful work experience that I can use to catapult myself to new places later on, should I desire to do so.

in reference to the uni thing i can say without a doubt that Uni's do not prepare students for the real world.

I've been involved in taking on a few students and they aren't taught stuff that's applicable or they say they can do stuff when they can't. Uni's need to get some business people in to help write courses.

In my particular case it was looking for a video editor to help with our video productions, to do some basic edits before handing it over to more experienced staff. They didn't even know how to get the footage off the camera's!

We have some pretty huge clients and you couldn't let a student do an edit for them and after 12 months of shaping them and getting them working to a good level it's time to go back to Uni.

I know the feeling, we get a fresh load of Accountancy Grads every September (being an Accounting Firm and all that) and they tend to be more clueless than the school leavers we get with no training.

They know all the theory, but everything they've been taught at Uni has a very definite answer that they need to work to, nothing in the real world is as clear cut or as straight-forward... you'd be better with the school leaver who turns up with an open mind and hasn't been brain-washed by Uni into thinking they know EVERYTHING.

They know all the theory, but everything they've been taught at Uni has a very definite answer that they need to work to, nothing in the real world is as clear cut or as straight-forward... you'd be better with the school leaver who turns up with an open mind and hasn't been brain-washed by Uni into thinking they know EVERYTHING.

that sums it up nicely.

in reference to the uni thing i can say without a doubt that Uni's do not prepare students for the real world.

That’s poor form if they couldn’t even do that, especially if they were doing practical media, but perhaps they lied about what their course taught them.

Most universities should do work placements, I know mine did, which gave me a valuable insight into production companies, and also made me realise I didn’t want to work in one!

That said, you’ll usually need to do a bit of hand holding with most graduates, thing is they’re generally fast learners!

Aint that the truth. IMO the only people who should go into higher education are doctor's,lawers, scientists etc. All this anyone can go into higher education is a bit like theres no loosers in school sports days anymore. everyone wins and feels special, apart from the poor sod who employs them. The reason alot of people who dont go down the higher ed route are more bright is because they dont believe everything that is parroted to them and learn for their self. Plus they aint been saddled with a shed load of debt that they have to work off for the rest of their lives cause too many people are waving round pieces of worthless "hard earned" paper for them to get a decent job, so they a generally more with it,happier people. UNI means nothing anymore.

The problem for you, Voodoo, is that Paradaz is not alone in his experiences. You and I have a history as well and it faces the same critcisms. This is a pattern with you. Deny it all you want but it will only make you look worse than you already do, while reinforcing the charges laid at your feet.

ohhh get Mr Popular, the guy who everyone thinks so highly off. Another day eh KFC?

Why has no-one said the obvious comment...

"They'd have got the same result using four xbox 360's"

Only if they'd wanted something to drown out the noise of all the planes.

Not bad. Laughing

There is something to what you've typed. Much as I wanted to reject the notion in my more impetuous youthful university years, one of my professors was/is correct when he stated that the vast majority of university educations focus on the theoretical, which is well and good, yet leaves much to be desired in terms of imparting hands-on experience.

Do I detect a tone of resentment?

While the classic philosopher living in an ivory tower on the hill certainly has its downsides, so too does the illiterate, black-lung afflicted coal miner with poor dental care. Both are extreme stereotypes. University is not the solution to all things in life, however to discount it completely is just as monumentally stupid as keeping a child out of school because "life will teach them all they need to know, etc". Part of life is learning and organized, coherent, empirical and creative educational programs help facilitate this. It does not remove the importance of hands-on experience and vice versa.

Each of them is one half of a greater whole. Combine them and I am confident you increase the likelihood of ending up with a superior product/outcome. Indeed, history attests to this when one examines the advancements in human societies. Knowledge is one source of power and education is one of the most direct means of gaining knowledge (with the caveat that it does depend on the quality of materials, teachers and students available, etc).

Do I detect a tone of resentment?

Resentment at what exactly? I stated in my opening that i do believe some professions require uni (even if its just to learn from each other and study to progress things). Just what gets my goat is that most who go to uni/collage do so because thats whats been drummed into them to aspire to. Go to school, get good grades(keeps them busy and out of "trouble"Wink then off to uni to get a diploma,a good paying job and live happy ever after. This might be true for a select few but for most its bs. Most either drop out (they was only there for the partying and sex anyway) or end up in a field totally unrelated to what they studied in, either due to financial hardship nipping at them so take what they get,or contacts/friend gets them a well paid job and they settle.

One of the easiest and well paid jobs i did was bricklaying. theres a skills shortage due to all these people who want to work in a nice dry office. Some sites i was getting paid more than the site agents with there diplomas lmfao. So its all good for me. let them rush into uni debt and ill keep living the dream.........well january i will anyway.

P.S. My ivory tower is in the valley not on the hill Laughing

That's fair enough, IMO, Moss.

Before the economic recession took its toll on the construction industry, I did find it quite ironic that given the explosion of higher education in the past half century compared to the previous thousands of years of human civilization, skilled manual labour was suddenly able to pull in comparable wages (and in some cases even better wages). I suppose it partly reinforces the concept of "real value" (i.e. brick laying produces something tangible that can be used. Complex financial schemes meant to befuddle the average citizen while making some silent partner rich is not a commodity with any inherent value).

The world needs all sorts, including thinkers, tinkerers, builders, writers, etc. and I can only recommend to any person - irrespective of their ethnic background, their upbringing, their interests - that they seek some sort of education. Whether it be as a mechanic or a nuclear physicist, or as an actor or councilor and more besides; it imparts both skill sets and personal knowledge/growth each of which can (but aren't guaranteed to,) pay dividends.

Never a truer statment spoke. A equation such as E=mc2 has mathematical beauty therefore the work of "god",the monetary system we seem so keen and totally dependant could never work in such a simple to read way due to the fact that it would be plain to see how we are being screwed over. Im happy to look after my friends and family without all that economic bs rammed down my throat by politicians lining there own duck houses.

With that in mind i do sincerely believe that its cheaper and more space effective to strap 2 ps3s together than 4 360s. Laughing

Agreed on both counts providing that the two PS3s are PS3 slims. Very Happy

All the negative press, first of all...

The Xbox online community is solid and I think this is due to the headset out of the box and party chat etc but that’s about it and overall, the PS3 is the best way to play great games, some online but for mainly offline. The Resistance series are still the best exclusive FPS on any current gen console unless you dig Halo. Killzone 2 trumps them all.

Uncharted 2 is also a main reason to buy a PS3 not to mention its excellent predecessor. That coupled with Metal Gear Solid 4 proves for TPS, PS3 is the best console to own.

Gran Turismo Prologue, Wipeout HD and the Motorstorm series cover the racing field with GT5 and Mod Nation incoming, while PGR and Forza play similarly and don’t offer the variable range of PS3's racers.

With platformers such as Little Big Planet and the Ratchet and Clank series available, you can keep Banjo and his back to the drawing board routine.

That including other titles such as Infamous, Valkyria Chronicles, SOCOM, D Souls and Yakuza 3 (import best option), Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma and many more. Glad we got that sorted. My Xbox 360 (I had few after RROD) and Wii gathered so much dust after the arrival of PS3, I had to clean them and sell them.

The Cell is one of the most exciting pieces of hardware to be developed and it contributed to the first record being achieved as it surpassed one petaFLOPS as a network. We've only recently seen demonstrations of developers getting to grips with the hardware and producing some of the worlds best looking games such as Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 (games not ported from Xbox 360 tech) and they'll get even better as devs go deeper into the processor. IMB also impressed by the tech that they bagan intergrating the Cell Broadband Engine Architecture microprocessors into its line mainframes.
