After all the leaks and magazine scans, EA has finally put official confirmation on Dead Space 2, on its way to PS3, 360 and PC.
"Isaac Clarke returns for another heart-pounding adventure, taking the fight to the Necromorphs in this thrilling action-horror experience," says the official blurb, which gives away very little in the way of gameplay specifics.
"New tools to gruesomely slice and dismember the Necromorphs complement Isaac's signature plasma cutter, empowering him as he meets new characters, explores epic zero-G environments, and fights against a relentless Necromorph onslaught. Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind in Dead Space 2 - this time, he calls the shots."
Steve Papoutsis, executive producer of Dead Space 2 adds: "The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of Necromorphs that need killing.
"In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you."
No rough date or anything, though. Guess it's still all eyes on those magazines, then...
I better get round to buying and completing the first game!
You defo should, the first game actually kept me away from playing Fallout 3 and Fable 2 until i'd finished it. Much better than Resi 5 (which was still great, before the Resi-philes kick off) and genuinely created a very scary atmosphere that i haven't experienced since playing Resi 2.
On the flip side to you ensabahnur, Fable 2 and most def Fallout 3 kept me from playing dead space, have always meant to pick it up, it's dirt cheap everywhere now, my local Game has it for Ł9.99.
Have heard such a mixed bag of opinions on what the game like though..
AH f**k. Why do i have a feeling this is going to be utter s**te. The first was about one man desperately surviviing against an unknown menace. Bloody good premise if you ask me.
From that Blurb it sounds like the sequels gonna take a leaf out of Resi 5's book. Isaacs back Kicking ass and taking names biatches.
Gone will be all suspence and intreigue just another f**king 3rd person shooter.
"Dead Space" was the second game I played to completion on my Xbox 360 and it remains one of the best first games I purchased for the Xbox 360. A fantastic gaming experience that oozes post production quality. To those of you whom haven't played this game yet: treat yourselves and do so post haste!

I hope i'm wrong, i really do.
My feeling is the polar opposite of yours apparently, Monkey. Given everything that transpired in "Dead Space" it would not be unthinkable that Isaac didn't lay waste to all of the necromorphs. Perhaps there were even pockets of survivors in other parts of the mining colony? What if the subliminal messages and mutating powers of the unearthed artifact had already contaminated other people, some of whom might somehow have escaped on another vessel? Or it could be that we are introduced to a place further in to the time line after the events of the first game and rescue teams have arrived only to watch the nightmare start all over again (or continue if you will, which fits the cryptic message advertised in another "Dead Space" thread).

Well im not gonna cry like a little bitch about Resi 5, I thought it was pretty good too but Dead Space was better.

I couldn't agree more, I completed it on all difficulties on the 360 then let my nephew borrow it, big mistake, I fancied playing thru ot again so got it back off him and the disk was unreadable (he is at uni though, so knowing what them uni boys are like I should of expected that!) I got it on PS3 cheap and am currently enjoying going thru it again. IMO if someones played this and got bored or didn't like I think they're crap at it!

It's funny becasue you're right as there was another ship that left the ishimura with survivors on bored. One of them oddly immune to the maddening effects of the necromorphs. Also it appears that the company may have known about them all along and was infiltrated by several high ranking members within the church of unitology that believe them to be the next step of human evolution, which want the marker brought to earth.
There's so many lose ends in the story at the moment and possible places to take it i just think its a shame they've decided to not have a new protagonist.
It was the PR spin in the announcement that's got me a little wary. However i have no doubt that viseral games will make another cracking game.
To anyone who has the means and wants more Deadspace i couldn't urge you enough to play Extraction on the wii. It adds a ,ot more depth and context to the plot, as well as being hands down the finest on rails shooter ever made.
only difference is the exclusive suit and wepon colors you can get (obsi black on ps3) which is nice and all but after it was free for a while now its 2-3 pound. otherwise game is identical on both machines. almost got platinum on it but impossible difficulty lives up to its name

The fact that they said he meets some new characters makes me think that it may well be set on that ship. If true I think it's a great move as it'll mean the dark claustrophobic atmosphere will be a lot easier to reproduce than if they had set it back on the planet.
Having said that, if it was set on a colony on the planet, there's a lot more they could do to add a bit of variety, like say have the odd outdoor section to get from one part of the colony to the other(a la BioShock 2). They can't go wrong really whatever they decide.
The first Dead Space had one fundamental element that is still unsurpassed by any other game in the horror genre, and that is atmosphere. The awesome sound combined with the brilliant tense mood created a game that literally, came from nowhere to cement its reputation as a true horror contender. It was not perfect by any means (tell me a game that is?) but I remember playing it for the first time at a friends house on a 48inch screen in 5.1 surround (volume pumped up) and his old man (total NON gamer) came in and he was mesmerised. The game had an uncanny effect on him. So we switched off the lights and handed him the pad... Now, he keeps asking us to put 'that brilliant horror game' on! The point is, Dead Space deserves our credit, whereas in the past its always been Resi Resi Resi. I thought Resi 5 was a tad disappointing to be honest, and playing DS was a breath of fresh air. The Japanese had the horror genre sewn up at one time...not any more! Welcome back Isaac...
WHERESMYMONKEYPosted: 7 Dec 09 4:01 pm Post subject: I don't think they'd set it back on the planet as i thought it was pretty much ripped to bits by the end of deadspace. it'd be good if Isaac met up with the surviving characters from Extraction though. bring it all together so to speak.
Erm you may be on to something there, what I don't get about Extraction is where are the characters from Downfall? Both take place (roughly) around the same time and same locations yet there is no mention of them or cameos of the characters from Downfall.
I have feeling it'll be set on Earth, what with the other marker being there, either that or Isaac either crash lands, lands on another planet somewhere or gets picked up by another ship.
i thought all the characters in downfall got killed. Then again i don't remember it that well. HOwever i was expecting to see them in extraction at some point but it seems like it's set sort of just before/after it.
My money's on Issac being picked up by another ship and their being something stowed away with him.
I was gripped by "Dead Space" from the get go. I lasted about 30-40 minutes on "Resi 5" then put it down permanently (I have no intention of renting or buying it after borrowing it from a work colleague). Just the controls in "Dead Space" alone put "Resi 5" to massive shame.
Regarding the colony, sure it was probably demolished, but the planet itself as a planetary mass should have survived the colliding mass cut out of its surface.
Any predictions on a half-reliable release date for the sequel?

Yeah I forgot about that, the 360 version had the Elite suit but the Obsidian suit in the PS3 version looked a lot cooler, black with glowing blue visor as oppossed to the Elites browney/grey with glowing green visor (obvisouly modeled on the repspective machines their on).

By the time you've upgraded the engineer's suit completely it looks pretty cool. It's also possible to get the military suit after having completed the game. It is quite expensive though so you won't be able to buy it straight away on the second play through. Looks cool though, from what I recall.
Yes, the HUD, map, energy gage etc where truly superb and very innovative, never once distracting from the gameplay (very clevery implemented)...Still think Metroid Prime pips it in that department though - oops!... There you go, I've just started an Isaac vs Samus debate...

Good to hear that there's going to be more variety of enemies, it's the only thing I really didn't like about the first Dead Space.

Wasn't there an article on here recently saying that it was to be released in 2010?. My guess would be around late November.

Argh! Too long! hehehe I have no idea when it will launch but 2010 sounds better than 2011 to my ears.

They did get killed, but I'm not sure where it fits in the story or if it's Canon, don't forget that (along with the motion comics) it was the prequel to DS before Extraction was announced/released, now I'm uncertain about it, as Extraction is the prequel too.
That sounds good, I'd like it to be on another ship (although I believe it will p**s quite a few people off if it was), the thing about something being stowed onboard with him sounds similar to the Alien films, not a bad idea mind.
It's possible since he was hallucinating at times which was one of the symptoms of the afflicted. Still, it is unclear whether one turns in to a full necromorph just from being in the vicinity of the artifact (although it's clear it affects the mental status of the individual in the vast majority of cases). One thing that is for certain: it would be awfully difficult to play as Isaac-turned-necromorph since they tend to be humans that were killed and then were..converted..into necromorphs afterwards. Since EA has stated we will be taking up the role of Isaac once more against horrific creatures one can presume that he has at the very least not completely turned yet, if he will at all.
I can't believe I nearly missed out on the original Dead Space, I played the "Dismemberment Demo" and I didn't like it but earlier this year my brother bought it and I thought I may as well give it a try since it's here, oh my, what a game. It's the most enjoyable gaming experience I've had since... lets just say this generation of consoles, can't wait for the second.
