Modern Warfare 2 hack breaks PS3 leaderboards

Will Infinity Ward hit the reset button?
The PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2 has been struck with a series of leaderboard hacks that see cheaters appearing at the top of the lists with impossible figures.

According to reports, the PS3 leaderboards are showing hackers sitting high on the rankings with statistics simply not achievable (showing play time to be in the tens of thousands of days, for example).

A quick Google search brings up all sorts of foul play techniques people are employing just to see their names at the top of the listings on PS3, presumably because they're too rubbish to place high using actual skill.

We've asked Activision how it tends to fix the problem, hoping it won't call for a full leaderboard reset. Needless to say, we expect the people with the power to break out the Hammer of Bannage on those who cheat. So you probably shouldn't.

Good, this s**t always p**ses me off. Its the same at the top of every PS3 leader board and its pretty annoying. Especially when I was getting pretty high up on the GTA leader boards, and I may have made to the first page it if there weren't loads of
unlikely scores on there.

(Top 50 for Team Mafiya though, that'll do me).
shadyMrPatch on 7 Dec '09
This i don't get, why cheat at an online game? Your always gonna be shown up or dealt with. Does it put their rank up cause TBH thats the only reason i could think of for doing it? Ban them, that's what i say. Then when they go to do it again they'll maybe think about it and not bother.

Seriously though, why? Bragging rights for something you've never done?

Whilst we're on about leaderboards have they sorted out the ones for Trials HD yet as some of the people at the top of those are just f**ked up. Crazy times with no faults but when you watch the vids they fall about halfway through then just writhe about on the floor for a few minutes and still get a time of half the amount they were rolling about for.
ensabahnur on 7 Dec '09
The leaderboards on the 360 are the same, i.e. non-believable stats. Whether this is a "hack", who knows (although I am sure someone will tell me).

How someone can "achieve" a kill streak of over 1400 for example, rings alarm bells.

I just don't see the point in people doing this, what do they get out of it, apart from everyone going - cheat!

It is rather sad that people play games to not actually play as the game is intended, too many people are stat boosting, which is pointless, but we don't live in a perfect world so this is never going to change.
headmate on 7 Dec '09
I think you're all forgetting the power of 'anonimity and youngsters' when you put that together, anything is possible.

Ban them, the message would get through, eventually.
ingy on 7 Dec '09
Sony don't care about cheaters in MW2, apparently, so why would they ban these ones? Rolling Eyes
altitude2k on 7 Dec '09
The thing I can't stand is that I've been reading posts over on gamefaq's, and these glitchers actually belive they're making the game more fun for everyone by introducing "a new tactic."
GTCzeero on 7 Dec '09
It doesn't take skill to get to the top. No, you need no commitments, no life, no job and no real friends.

Or, of course, you could just cheat. Thus allowing you to be top of the leaderboard and still have all of the above.

This I find quite funny.
Mark240473 on 7 Dec '09
lol theres no way id be anywhere near the top but bet id still kick there assits. the only thing ive done was set up a private match just so i could learn the maps, which if you play CTF you can win every game. is this the sort of stats they are on about. i noticed when i play private matches with my friends you dont get your XP so they couldnt rank up that way.

b.t.w its not something i do all the time, just when i want to learn a map abit more. Also is it me or dose rust never pop up? Only ever played that map once.
moss66 on 7 Dec '09
I find it funny that when Microsoft said they would ban people for the javelin glitch people were up in arms.

Now other people are hacking the leader boards your calling for the ban hammer?
roland82 on 7 Dec '09
I don't think people should be banned for cheating to get a higher leader board position. If they can prove these player actually cheated to get their position on the board then brand them cheats with a special cheater rank badge so everyone in game can see the dirty cheaters.

Resetting the whole leader board would be a horrible idea and would spoil the game for the proper players a lot more than having the cheats stay at the top of the table.
Toasted_PSP on 7 Dec '09
ya I noticed this last week when a friend told me the top guy has already played more than 2000 days and had a score of 21billion or smthg! it seems this game is so damn broken in so many ways.
Sleepaphobic on 7 Dec '09
I'm not sure about the time played being all out of whack, but I have a buddy who said that in order to get the insane kill streaks and super-high kill-death ratios people are exploiting a work-around for the cage matches, where you can somehow invite a friend (which IW didn't intend). So they then just stand there and shoot each other in the face over and over.

He told me he's done it, and I will never let him live it down. Why people feel the need to do this sort of thing is beyond me...
strapp31 on 7 Dec '09
Why can't people just enjoy the games the way they are meant to be? I get so p**sed off at people who feel the need the cheat others just to get higher on these boards that so few give a crap about! I play online with friends for FUN! Not to get higher on a board!
G_R7 on 7 Dec '09
Wow oh my gosh is that somebody over there that actually wastes or gives a dam about leader boards?

because to me it seems like its just a list of who has a life more devoted to a game than living life. Im sure most good players good get to the top if we didnt have work or studies etc.

Let them have there last laugh i say, because its going be funny when they get banned.

very good idea, to go one better on the 360 they could make the users avatar wear a skirt and have pigtails whilst wearing a t-shirt saying "dirty cheat"..... wouldnt it be good if they did that to football players who dive as well, drogba would be a fulltime tranny wouldnt he lol...
headspin on 7 Dec '09
the same thing happened to the leaderboards for modern warfare on the wii. i'll give treyarch their due, they removed the cheaters.

doesn't stop the cheaters doing it again mind...
ste hicky on 7 Dec '09
i can't see this being sorted out any time soon. If Sony aren't going to bring the ban hammer down on bastards that use the javelin glitch, i doubt they're gonna bother with hacked leaderboards.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 7 Dec '09
what about the 360 version. i looked at the top leaders in kills and they have 1700 kill streaks....how is that possible? i'm not bad at the game yet i accept there are people miles and miles better than me but that is impossible! apparantly kill streaks do not inclue care-package stuff such as turrents or air-strikes etc. that makes it even more impossible that they could do that in a single match. anyone feel free to set me straight if i'm getting this wrong????
OOFLEMING on 7 Dec '09
I don't see the sense in cheating or glitching. Such people are really sad pathetic little assholes they are only slightly better than people that copy games.... just about though. Wouldn't p**s on them if they were on fire.
gogo65uk on 7 Dec '09
To the chap posting about Trials HD cheaters. Thats not a cheat, thats just a bug in the replay. I got 7th in the world on one of the tracks with a flawless round but when I or anyone else went to view the replay, it showed me crash and just sit there flailing about.
spr1ngbock on 7 Dec '09
whats the point in cheating, takes the fun out of the game.

rather work for my rank thank you very much, and if it takes time then so be it, least i know i worked to get there.
Darth_Raiden on 7 Dec '09
A name and shame end of story Sad

What about the ones in the mini-games where you have to try break as many bones as possible, i've seen people break about 1000 odd bones (which, of course, is impossible) by landing the wooden board at the start and flailing about until it seems to spring their bodies everywhere. Surely that ones a glitch.
ensabahnur on 7 Dec '09
It's the same on the 360 MW2 leaderboards. Why has it taken so long to pick up on?

MW2 is inferior to COD4 in so many ways, I really wish they didn't kill this game but they've managed it. The kill streaks are unbalanced and so are the perks, what ever happened to the saying "if it isn't broke, don't fix it". This game would've been better if they kept it the same and just improved the graphics and maps (but saying that MW2 maps are cack anyways). I'm a fan of I dub but they've failed everyone this time round. WAW is even better ShockedShockedShockedShocked

There is a glitch at the start where the rider gets stuck and then the physics go mental.

As for Microsoft banning people for the javelin glitch they have only suspeneded people.
pp82 on 7 Dec '09
This just has to be fixed, there are thousands and thousands of hackers on there now. If their PSN accounts aren't I.P banned then they have to do a full leaderboard reset. Just I.P ban them now and save the hassle.
The Bossman on 7 Dec '09
Actually these guys hacked and I may know a little tip on how they did it. They hacked the leaderboards and you can tell because every board has the same stat (wins and losses are the same as kills and deaths). Also if you looked at their rank, they dont show the symbol. Some of the players are ranked 70, but yet, it doesnt show the symbol of what they achieved, so this means they didn't go through the game properly. Some players make a brand new account and then hack on it. So technically they have a higher rank because it is shown, but really they are level 1.

Some guys can hack by saving their game data on a flashdrive or some other device. Then, they could plug it in a computer, copy down a code or hack and save it then upon the ps3 game data. I've seen it happen in call of duty 4: modern warfare many times. Just be careful about this. I know this also because I have doen this and thats is how many of the guys did on cod4. Some of the guys were put in a separate server.

I'm personally not that fussed about the overall leaderboard as I know I'm never going to get anywhere near the top of it.

So long as I'm heading up my friends list that's fine by me! Cool

That Javelin glitch is a real pis**r though, I caught someone doing it last night. It took a while before I realised what was happening but then I actually bothered to watch the kill cam and there it was in all it's unglorified sh*tness!

Where's the fun in running around a level constantly holding the Javelin just so you get a kill when you've been shot!?!? Or am I missing something?

Yes, but it would also make you a massive t**t. Ok, arguably, the first would do the same, but, my point is still valid.

Tbh, I could'nt care less whose name is at the top of some list somewhere. I would rather they sorted out all the cheating ingame first. Free for all is a joke at the moment. The amount of times ive seen two little rent boys hid in a corner nuke boosting, or some plank running around with a javelin is beyond belief. Hope this patch sorts it out when its released.

I did find it amusing how the most accurate person on the leaderboard had over 200% accuracy with -3000 odd shots Very Happy

Counter Strike. It is better - just not graphically. Far better MP, though.

Simply put, BAN! You cheat you're gone. Works great on MS's Xbox Live servers. Shouldn't have to be tolerated, ever! These people are so pathetic of a gamer that they have to cheat to make themselves try to look cool. But in all actuality, they look like a bunch of tools.
