Wii is "fastest-selling console in UK history"

Wii storms past 6 million sales in less than three years
Nintendo has managed to flog over 6 million Wii consoles in under three years on the humble little island of the UK alone, making it the fastest-selling home console in UK history.

The landmark figure was cracked last week - ending November 28 - just under three years since the console launched on December 8, 2006.

Nintendo UK's big boss man, David Yarnton, said: "With its inclusive, family-friendly and fun nature, we're very pleased Wii seems to have captured the imagination of over six million families across the UK and reached such a landmark sales figure in such a short space of time. We'll work even harder to ensure that the interest in Wii stretches over months and years, appealing to people of all ages and gaming experience."

Just make sure Super Mario Galaxy 2's hard as NAILS, please Nintendo.

In this Credit Card generation the kids get what they want, fast.

The Wii is still a 6th generation console with 7th Gen Controls. We sold ours.

Congrats to Nintendo, stick it to Sony and MS!

There have been some great Games on the Wii and lots and lots of shoite ones, reminds me of another console. What was it called again? Oh thats right, the PS2!

This is what happens when your the market leader, you get huge numbers of Games and have to be selective to find the good ones, but they are there!

So?

I've asked this before, but I guess I'll have to ask again: Why should Nintendo purely cater for the so-called 'hardcore gamer'? - these 'hardcore gamers' didn't exactly back them in the past, which practically left them ruined.

It's not even a case of 'selling out' either. Nintendo have purely chosen to try and appeal to a different marketplace and get others into gaming - there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, as far as I'm concerned....in a lot of ways, they're also helping the likes of Sony and MS - not to mention all of the developers.

If all the Wii offered was WiiFit and Carnival Games, I definitely would not own one - luckily, they still release the Marios, Zeldas and Metroids (which are still some of the highest rated games on any platform).

Good luck to them, I say - the gaming world is a lot better off with a Nintendo console than without.

lots of actual consoles sold.

the 'gamers' are just buying keep fit titles and balance boards instead of actual games.

what happened to new super mario bros beating MW2 reggie?

your customers aint gamers, therein lies the problem.

love nintendo, just wish they would make a proper console.

the snes, n64 etc easily beat the wii for games. dont see how that could be argued against.

I might not use my Wii any more, but I am happy I could use it if I wanted to. Laughing I wouldn't ever sell it.

I don't actually think that's true though.

The SNES was a brilliant console, but it had its limitations and those limitations also affected the games that could be created for it - we don't have those limitations anymore and I don't think many would be buying side-scrollers on the PS3 or 360 either.

The N64 was also a great console (one of my personal favourites), but the way it was designed (alongside the dominance of the PS1) meant that it was never going to get the kind of multi-platform titles that the competition recieved. The N64 was brilliant, but I definitely think that the Wii has just as many AAA titles already than the N64 ever had (obviously, the N64 had one or two classics that are generally considered the Greatest games of all time) - plus, the Wii will end up with more before the end of its shelf life.

It's all too easy to criticise Nintendo and the Wii - especially if you look at them with rose-tinted specs and only focus on the likes of WiiFit and the numerous shovelware party games - but, the bottom line is that Nintendo still create brilliant games and the Wii is the only place to play a lot of them.

As for what Reggie said about NSMBWii and MW2 - well, that's Reggie, he's bound to say things like that. I'm sure NSMBWii will sell millions and probably won't be far off.....which is pretty impressive when you consider it's only available on one platform.

At the end of the day, I'd much rather play NSMBWii than MW2....by a substantial margin.

Rolling Eyes

Wii > GC.

The games in the main franchises are simply better on Wii than they were on the GC, Metroid Prime aside.

As for the MW2 vs NSMB thing, it's a matter of weeks from happening if you actually remember the context of what Reggie said, which was in North America alone, vs the sales of MW2 on a single platform, without stating which one. So it could be either PS3 or 360.

It's currently just 1million behind the PS3 version after just one week of sale.

It's kind of like when people thought GTAIV would be the biggest selling game of the year... and then Mario Kart utterly destroyed it.
milky_joe on 3 Dec '09

simple logic grasshopper. I can play all the best Nes, snes, N64, and cube games on my wii. As well as Neo Geo, C64, Mega Drive and master system games too.

Then there's the great wii games that have been released for the system on top of that.

Oh yeah i can also play every single monkey island (except 4 but that was a bit s**t so it doesn't count). Which as far as i'm concerned makes it one of the best consoles ever made.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 3 Dec '09
So how many of those 6 million are used, and how many are on top of wardrobes, under stairs etc?

The embarrassing thing is, in three years, the Wii's list of AAA games consists of Zelda TP -- which isn't even exclusive to Wii -- and Mario Galaxy, at a push.

How is the Wii the worst Nintendo console when it has some great games not to mention the fact you can download old games new games and play your Gamecube back catologue. svd_grasshopper on 3 Dec '09
What a complete moron you are, SVD! How f***ing deluded are you, really? You say "the 'gamers' are just buying keep fit titles and balance boards instead of actual games".

Is that so? Is that why Zelda, Smash Bros, Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart have sold more than the PS3's biggest games? Even Resident Evil 4 has sold more than RE5 on the PS3 and Metroid Prime 3 has sold more than Killzone 2 and didn't come on a wave of hype like on the scale of Sony's title.

The biggest selling game on the PS3 is a god damn demo. What does that say you tit?

PS: Reggie said single format and to see after the New Year. I don't think he'll be much wrong when it comes to beating the PS3 version Rolling Eyes

Oh, and by the way. Sony were king of the casual market before. Why are they allowed to do it and Nintendo aren't?

And Animal Crossing and Wii Music, though considered 'flops', have also sold more than most PS3 games and aren't party or fitness games either...

wii sports - 50 million sales.

60 million consoles sold.

about 80% have used the wii for keeping fit.

mario kart 18 million sales.

that would be about 20% using it for a real game...

And your point is?

If you want to play the numbers game then look here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_selling_games#Wii

Then look at Sony's:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_selling_games#PlayStation_3

The PS3 has sold around as many N64s (maybe more). The N64's games sold a hell of a lot more. The GC sold less but again its games sold more. So what's your point?

The fact is, not even Sony's so called loyal fanbase are buying enough games and more people must be buying it for what it really is: a cheap multimedia machine. Again, I roll my eyes Rolling Eyes

I like how your defence for the PS3 is one of the most casual titles on the system. Next you'll be trying to tell us COD is for real gamers only. Considering the sales figures there's a lot of guys that don't consider gaming a hobby that own both.

You realise that those figures are referring to the female gamers explicitly? As in, it doesn't mean that 80% of Wii owners are women, it means that 80% of female gamers owned a Wii.

the wii is mainly played by non traditional gamers.

you dont need to be embarrased by this. why cant you accept it?

its not aimed at traditional gamers. just look at the adverts - ant & dec, a bunch of milfs from aerobics class, families, little boys and girls.

without the motion hook, these types wouldnt go near it, and it would be far more in-tune with the games scene, and i'd own one.
svd_grasshopper on 3 Dec '09
I'm guessing you have seen the lastest PS3 advertising then as its all clearly aimed at the mainstream and families, so does that mean that the PS3 isn't a gamers machine either? Ironicly PS owners make claims about how Sony's console is the gamers machine, when in fact it was the first console to take it away from them and take to the mainstream Rolling EyesRolling Eyes

What the hell are you talking about far more in tuned with the games scene. the only reason that the wii hasn't got most of the games on the 360 and PS3 is its lack of graphical power.

It's also the most traditional games machine on the market. It plays games. And does pretty much nothing else. All of its adverts are aimed at encouraging more people to play videogames and take a more japanese approach to them. They're just another form of entertainment. enjoy them. Which in my mind can't be a bad thing.

The funny thing is that Layton and NSMBw are some of the best games on any system this gen and hard as nails.

I can't believe you of all people argue about the wii's lack of credibility as a gaming platform and its marketing, when you rant and rave about the PS3. Which up untill recently Sony wouldn't even refer to as a games machine and even now they seem to place that amoungst a list of other lesser functions.

At least nintendo know what they're selling and how to do so.

considering the state of your so called traditional game scene at the moment i'm happy to own an predominantly play on the console that isn't a part of it.

The Wii is a storming success for Nintendo. Yes, it has its fair share of duff titles (just like the other two...) but its saving grace is the backwards compatibility with the 'Cube.
To be honest, I have a large family, and occasionally when we have a party or on a Sunday, it is always the Wii-mote that we fight over. I have been gaming since 1983 (ZX Spectrum) so I do have extensive knowledge about this great pastime.
Now when I try to tell the adults about Tekken 6, Modern Warfare 2 or other so called 'hardcore' titles...I say "You must see this game guys!!..." its always a case of "Nah, put Monkey Ball on or Mario Galaxy Jon"...they become big kids!
They are just NOT interested in the aforementioned great titles! Of course they are not what we would call true gamers, but can you see what Nintendo has done here? I'm sure the more thinking and intelligent individual would say YES.
Ninty have been marching to a different beat all along and its worked for them. MASS MARKET = $$$
I believe the Wii is a test bed for their next machine, whatever that may be but you just mark my words...
In a couple of years time, we'll see where and how the Big N has re-invested its huge profits...

Absolutely.

I've been gaming since around the same time (Amstrad 6128 and the Arcades for me!) and I really hate this whole 'casual/hardcore' gamer tag. We're all gamers - there's no real way to discern between the two. I think the general yardstick that some use for this is the ownership of a Wii, or playing FPS games (which I hate).

I personally love things like Virtua Fighter, GTA, Forza, Fight Night, Mass Effect and Street Fighter....but, I also love a spot of Boom Blox, MadWorld or Endless Ocean.

At the end of the day - if the Wii is getting more people into our hobby (and helping to give it more of a widespread understanding), then I welcome it. It really helps that it does have some killer games too.

My Wii is also getting more play time than ever now as I sold my 360 this week. I'm back on the GBA too. Playing Metroid Zero Mission. Got a bit of retro thing going with that and the New Mario Bros

Hiroshi Yamauchi (ex Nintendo boss - and very wise man) mentioned two business philosophies that always stuck in my mind...

1)"Monopoly is efficient,competition is wasteful."
Nintendo's rise to power in the NES/SNES era.

2) "Employers don't pay wages, customers do."
And Nintendo has millions all over the world.

I had the chance to go and see them in Birmingham, but I really couldn't be bothered with travelling up there for it.

I'm in a bit of a retro phase too - my GF has asked me to dust the Dreamcast off for her. Something tells me it'll be for Rayman more than Daytona though.

That's a shame, but at least you'll be able to see them again at some point since they're apparently gonna do another album...

I have a Dreamcase too (the only time when Sega actually appealed enough to me for me to buy one) but I've got no SCART lead for it and I never get around to getting one. I've got Daytona too but I want to finish Code Veronica as I never got around to doing that. Street Fighter Alpha 3 took up too much time at that stage

POWER STONE! Aaahh...lovely, lovely game is Power Stone...

Got the second one. And Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and Dead or Alive 2 and Soul Calibur, as well as the aforementioned SFA 3. A bit of a beat em up machine, the DC was. I had VF 3 as well but ended up getting rid of that...

I've got the arcade stick somewhere. I used to go absolutely mad for fighting games and the arcade stick was a great bit of kit (brilliant for Virtua Striker too).

I really need to get all my games sorted - they're scattered all over the place....the GF is threatening to buy Spyro! - jeez, I really hope I still have Bass Fishing and Crazy Taxi....I'm not ashamed to admit a deep, deep love for Bass Fishing.

@JuiKen - I really hope the second TCV album doesn't hold up the next QOTSA album.....Era Vulgaris seems like it was ages ago.

At the end of the day, I'd much rather play NSMBWii than MW2....by a substantial margin.

Rolling Eyes

I think I might be with you on that one squire. I'm glad my mum's got a Wii so I can still play the handful of amazing games that are made for it.

Even her Majesty the Queen has a Wii...
Giggity Giggity Go go go!
(Bet she hasn't even heard of Xbox or Playstation) - sorry fan(ny) boys - only a joke!
Jon Ahmad on 3 Dec '09
@ Parma. I really don't mind waiting for the next Queens album. Though 'Era Vulgaris' was good, it seemed rather samey to me. The Foos can also enjoy their extended break and come back with something fresh too

I think this article has some truth in it...

http://www.techdigest.tv/2009/12/opinion_do_you.html

Although SVD is a tad bit over attached to his Sony and comes out with too much crap, thus shooting himself in the foot too often than not, I feel he has some valid points about the Wii. I for one am a gamers gamer and have had virtually every mainstream console one time ore the other and I can help but feel hugely let down by the Wii still...

And although you guys give SVD a good bashing every week for being a fanboy, you may not like to admit it but it seems like the same people (Osiris, Milkyjoe, Monkey, Juikuen among others...)come out every Nintendo article bigging up the Wii (a bit too over entusiastically imo!!)...At least SVD is openly a fanboy!

P.S. Playing past console games on the console is cool but all that reminds us is that the previous console games were great and how Nintendo are papering over how lacking the Wii games are(and of course to earn more revenue out of the real fans who have more than likely have previously bought it on a past console)

Maybe I'm talking crap but ho hum!
ei8hty5ive on 3 Dec '09
I'm not really sure how I've 'bigged' up the Wii in this thread, all I've done is point out the glaringly obvious errors that are (as usual) contained in practically every one of his posts.

I consider it a public service.
milky_joe on 4 Dec '09
I'll think you'll find that I generally defend any console if people are making stupid statements about it. It just so happens that the Wii tends to get more crap thrown at it by fanboys than any other. I don't pretend that I'm not a fan of Nintendo, I just try to take a wide point of view to every debate on these forum's. I Wonder why you jump to SVD defense, I'm sure he's capable of speaking for himself...
Osiris25 on 4 Dec '09
Ha haaa! Of course I will come out and say I don't big up the Wii. I'm talking in simple logic and facts and don't post inane bullsh*t in my defense. SVD on the other hand post some of the most ridiculous messages I've ever read, like he's jealous or threatened by the Wii. I merely post figures etc to show he is wrong. Not to say I am a fanboy.

Besides, I've openly said in the past I aim to buy a PS3 at some point in the future but you have seperate fact and deluded opinion, much of which the latter comes from SVD. He might make some factual points but then screws that up with his bullsh*t fanboyism. Sadly, you can't open the eyes of someone like that and hence, he will most likely get bashed for a long time if he keeps up his usual, stupid rants
JuiKuen on 4 Dec '09
Spot on! There should be a separate planet for odd socks and fan(ny) boys!
They're hardly ever constructive, usually quite immature and very one dimensional...
Jon Ahmad on 4 Dec '09

What the hell are you talking about far more in tuned with the games scene. the only reason that the wii hasn't got most of the games on the 360 and PS3 is its lack of graphical power.

it lacks more than just graphical power, but lack of grunt is the biggest reason.
and another reason is that certain developers dont want to be associated with the wii. whether or not thats justified i cant say. i have all 3 consoles, and i like the wii the least. but thats just my taste in games.

It's also the most traditional games machine on the market. It plays games. And does pretty much nothing else.

wrong, the wii has a built in browser, weather and news reports etc. the 360 has none of that.

I can't believe you of all people argue about the wii's lack of credibility as a gaming platform and its marketing, when you rant and rave about the PS3. Which up untill recently Sony wouldn't even refer to as a games machine and even now they seem to place that amoungst a list of other lesser functions.

totally agree. Sony's "it only does EVERYHING" adverts p**s me off to no end.
i want my games consoles to be just that, games consoles. a swiss army knife never cuts as well as a hunting knife, but its got tweezers!
dvd playability is ok, but thats as far as multi-function should go i think. none of this facebook and twitter nonsense.
Cernunnos on 4 Dec '09
so yuor reason for ripping into my commnets defending the lil white box was???

I'm aware of the wiis other functions. but nothing much is made of them. Although unlike most of the crap thats recently been shoehorned onto the other platforms is kind of useful.

Also grunt is the same as graphical power when you are talking about game machines. then again the GC didn't have as much grunt as the xbox but could still pull out graphics of equal / better quality than it when it wanted to.

i couldnt be bottomd to read all the comments, so i just replied to the first one saying anything interesting.

so what if nothing much is made of them, they are still there, arent they? my point is that the 360 is the most traditional gaming console (still, at least). i personally dont find any of the wii's online "capabilities" usefull at all.

if by graphical power you mean its ability to put things on your tv screen, then sure, but thats a gross oversimplification. theres more to processing power than just aestethics.

Here we go again...Nintendo stated clearly that the Wii was not much of a graphical leap above the 'Cube before its release. The reason being was that a lot of time and money was spent investing in the innovative control interface. The Wii/Cube have the ability to produce amazing graphics/lighting effects/particles IF it is programmed properly. You have to write to the metal to squeeze the juice...
Games like Rogue Squadron, F Zero GX, Mario Galaxy, Luigi's Mansion, Monkey Ball, 1080 Avalanche, Metroid Prime and many others would not look out of place in an arcade. The style of these graphics are bold, colourful, chunky and eye catching. True it does not have hi-def 1080p yadda yadda...but surely, Nintendo's philosophy in 'Round 1' was to create a new interface. I am sure their next machine will combine hi-def graphics with a more advanced interface, which will again leave its competitors to 'copy' (as they always do) their ideas. Put it this way, when they introduced the Wii's controller, I think the whole world sat up and took notice, almost leaving hi-def as an afterthought...
