Motorola Milestone (Droid) hands-on review and video

Can the Milestone revive Moto's fortunes in the UK?

The speculation is over. The Motorola Milestone, or Droid as it's known Stateside, has arrived and T3 was blessed with the first sample device to make it to these shores.

Unfortunately, we can't demonstrate the full range of features to you yet, because the sample is just for show and is not loaded with software. Try to think of this as looking a new unfurnished flat... you can get an idea of the decor and how you might just fit in, but your favourite easy chair is not yet in the room.

The first thing we noticed about the Milestone, which has no network ties yet and is being sold SIM free at Expansys, was the size of the screen. At 3.7-inches, it's an absolute belter, superceding many of it's closest rivals. The resolution is also pretty impressive at 854 x 480.

The slider handset is also relatively weighty in the palm, but still retains a very sleek, slim appearance. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard is attractive, very soft to the touch, and much nicer than the recent DEXT handset from Moto. However the lack of definition between the keys may make this handset a little tricky for those of us burdened with big ol' sausage fingers.

The phone also features a feature-laden 5-megapixel camera, with auto focus, flash and image stabilisation. There's also a bunch of white balance and exposure options that we've yet to have the pleasure of playing with.

The silver tuna of course is the Android operating system, with the Milestone the first handset to be carrying the 2.0 update, which will really be the acid test for the phone that is being touted as Motorola's best in years.

We'll be back with more video as soon as the working model reaches us next week, but hopefully our sneak preview will give you a fair idea of what to expect from a phone that is proving to be a massive hit in the United States.

So do i get this one, or wait for the Sony X10 (8.1 Mp and 4 inch screen)? The T3 review of the X10 mentions that it will only run Android 1.6 due to the aspect ratio 480x854, but this is exactly the same as the milestone.
