EA to cut releases by 20%

Release roster down from 50 to 40 games in next fiscal year
EA is to cut its release roster by 20% in its next financial year, it's confirmed.

The news comes after the company announced 1500 job cuts, cancelled projects and the closure of Mercenaries dev, Pandemic Studios.

EA currently publishes more than 50 titles and plans to cut that back to about 40 next fiscal year to "focus on quality games", Reuters reports.

EA boss John Riccitiello says he could see the company publishing even fewer games going forward. "Thirty wouldn't shock me at some point in the future," he told Reuters.

As long as the cull means more Dead Space's and less Lord of the Rings: Conquest's, we're happy.

Agreed.

Just hope that doesnt mean cancelling more games like "Tiberium" which was cancelled last year; was really looking forward to that one.

As long as they don't go down the Activision route of only releasing games that they can bleed dry with countless sequels. We'd have never seen the likes of Dead Space or Dante's Inferno with that sort of business model.

We've seen EA become one of the better publishers over the last 12-18 months or so, and even as a dev. Hopefully this cull will be a benefit to the overall output of games rather than not.

EA are definitely a better company in my eyes(and others) over the past couple of years. Who would have thought that would happen?

A year or two ago I'd have made a comment saying "Oh, I guess that means instead of a game having 20 hours of content it'll only have 18." but since they bucked up their ideas I guess I'll have to keep it to myself Smile

I think the "rubber band" has been stretched as far as it could and now snapped back. What I mean by that is we've reached a point where there is to much choice in the market place and you can't afford the time or money to play them all. Hopefully this should see more polish and quality in the final games that has perhaps been missing in recent years due to stretched resources.

That's clever...now people will discuss what a tool you *would* have been for saying that, but you didn't so it's ok Wink

Hang on.... Razz

EA are s**t, i don't care if they release no games..... Give us back CriterionGames and Burnout the way it should be. Hopefully they won't release anymore Need for Speed games, thats a waste of time and game play to start with. EA to$$ers.
