PSPgo "will die" without cheaper games

Sony must make games more wallet-friendly, says Traveller's Tales
Traveller's Tales director Jon Burton has said that Sony must make PSPgo games much cheaper than their UMD brothers if it's to keep the digital dream alive.

"I'm betting on Sony making PSPgo games much cheaper than the UMD versions, or the PSPgo will die," he told Develop.

"I own a PSPgo but don't want to buy LittleBigPlanet, for instance, as I can get it 20 percent cheaper on UMD from Amazon and could resell it once I'm finished with it. But if I download it, I get no discount, and no chance to resell - how annoying is that?"

He's got a point.

That is true, but the games on the PSN store are cheaper than RRP. What Amazon choose to do Sony can't be forced to match.

Here's a counter argument. I buy from Amazon. I get 1 copy. I buy from the PSN I get 5 copies. Now with gamesharing (I share with my brothers not random people) I can split the cost making it much cheaper than retail. I lose out on reselling but I get it very cheap. I understand this isn't viable for everyone, but it is an option.

As for the PSP Go! it's pretty much doomed to begin with. Most gamers are savvy enough to realise they can buy a 3000 for under £100, get a 16GB stick and enjoy the best of both worlds for less than the £225 RRP of the Go!. That's what I'm doing. Smile

for post #1 - game sharing my be good for you but not for most people. how many will have 5 PSPs in the same house? also what happens when you upgrade (or get burgled like i did last year). you'll not be able to put it onto your psp 4000/ pspgoto.

i got 1 on launch & although i love it i'd recommend EVERYONE to get the 3000 pure & simply because of the PSN prices. i've only bought games i was REALLY looking forward to LBP, motorstorm, ghostbusters, assassins creed (got screwed with that 1! broken game, took sony a week to admit & kept telling me to phone ubisoft! eventually got a refund thank god as its now free!) or i buy games on the special offers. i'm still paying dramatically higher prices even on offer! also fifa 10 & fifa 09 are £29.99 IF you were to buy 1, why would you buy last years when you can get this years for the same price?!

the silly thing about the PSN store is that PS3 games are well priced! so why arent the PSP games the same?! i look at the minis for £4 then think i'll just get my iphone out & got the exact same game for 59p!

sony need to drop the prices, then they make probably a bit more money BUT would have vastly more happy customers & higher sales of the pspgo

PS1 classics £3.49-£7.99 (fairly priced BUT should be classics! winnie, lilo & peter pan?!)
PSP new releases should be £14.99-£19.99
PSP back atalogue should be £5.99-£9.99

I don't thing the videogame industry has got to grips with this concept of cheaper digital downloads. Retailers are constantly battling for the best price of the high street while in the world of digital download there isn't much competition, meaning they tend to set a price and don't adjust it for some time. But the biggest issue is that the prices are just to high for what your getting. The concept was that if you download a game it will be cheaper due to the fact that there is no packaging and physical media etc. It doesn't have to go through distributors or retailers hands who mock it up to get there profit too. A great example of this is The Sims 3. In store its £30-£35, online retailers have it for £25-£30, while direct download from EA's Store is £39.99??!!
How is that a better option for the customer, pay more get less? Lots of work still needs to be done to make it a good choice for the consumer

You don't need 5 psps in the house. You just need 5 people with access to the one PSN account. They can access it from anywhere they want.

Its a bloody good idea and one i've taken to doing with the ps3. We take it in turns to buy stuff from the store and share it out amoungst us.

Could be a good scheme to start online. Its sort of a blessing and a curse with the PSN. you get 3 downloads which can be put on any machine. But at the same time if said machine is lost or stolen then you lose everything on it.

At least with live you can always redownload what you had to a new machine. So long as you sort out the sodding rights management crap.

Swings and roundabouts i guess.

Sony really do need to sort out their PSN prices.
I think PS1 games and PS3 games are priced right, but Videostore and PSP games are well off the mark.

I saw one game on their last night (I forget which one), but it was £31.99. Now for a digital download that is taking the pi$$.
I know Sonys stratagy ever since the PS1 is sell consoles for a loss and make the money back on the games, but come on Sony!

this i see is the biggest problem with the go.
sony habve no competition in providing content for it so they have no pressure to offer the customers a good deal, competition is good for the consumer.
