Bob Dylan's favourite 'ballad singer' passes away after battling long illness
Irish folk legend Liam Clancy has died at the age of 74.
The the last surviving member of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem passed away after being ill for some time at 12 noon at Bon Secours Hospital, Cork, Ireland yesterday (December 4).
A statement on his official website liamclancy.com said: "Liam, the last surviving member of the Clancy Brothers, is survived by his wife Kim and their four children, Eben, Siobhan, Donal and Fiona, his eight grandchildren and his sisters Joan and Peg. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and his many fans throughout the world."
Clancy was hailed by Bob Dylan who once said he could not "think of anybody who's a better ballad singer than Liam".
Alongside County Armagh-born Makem, the four brothers carved out a reputation for singing Irish traditional folk songs in New York in the '60s.
They split various times but reformed after Tom Clancy died in 1990 for a farewell tour six years later.
All the remaining members including Tommy Makem have since passed away.
