Halo developer, Bungie's made no secret that it'd like to work on something not staring the Master Chief (or his mates) in the future. By the looks of a wave of new job listings on its website however, that non-Halo Bungie game could be closer than we thought.
Bungie's looking for several new employees to work on its next project including art, design, and engineering positions.
Most interesting though is the job description for writing lead, which is calling for a fresh-faced scribe who can "define Bungie's next game universe".

Just one glance at the wealth of games, books, anime shorts, encyclopaedias, action figures and bubble baths of the Halo franchise strongly suggests that that "universe" doesn't need defining. So this must be something new entirely, right?
Unfortunately, nothing else can be made from the job descriptions except that the new game will apparently feature online components. And that would've been a safe bet anyway.
With the Halo franchise now in the capable hands of 343 Industires it leaves Bungie free to work on other projects. Pretty sure they have already been working on some new IP already, if the Bungie boards are anything to go by.
I wouldnt expect to hear anything other than Reach from Bungie until maybe E3 next year and thats where they could possibly show their new IP.
If they're looking for a writer to define the story (usually one of the first things that gets put into the development being that it governs what's actually going to be in the game) then I would suggest that it's still a way off yet rather than "closer than we thought".
all depends really. A lot of the time Writers are brung in after all the gameplay mechanics have been nailed down to fill in the gaps. Might go for it. The worst they can say is no.

That's true, but I remember reading a good article featuring several big game writers. One of their biggest gripes is being hired after the game structure has been done and having to write a story around a game that's been developed with disregard to how a story is told/paced.

I guess in that respect it could be that Bungie know what the story will be in the grander sense - they will know the context, locations, protagonist and such - enough to get started on basic assets. They may just need a writer to come in a nail it all down.
Surprised Joe Staten isn't helming the writing, though.
Im sure I heard on a Bungie podcast that they have three different teams; one was doing ODST, one is doing Reach and the other must be the new IP?
Im not saying that there going to release a Game other than Reach in 2010 but im sure an E3 reveal for a Fall 2011 release wouldnt be out of the picture for a new Game from Bungie.

For those interested, by the way, the video that will be showed at Spike will apparently be the opening for Halo: Reach. So I'm pretty certain we'll get to see some in-game graphics.

Followed by another Halo for the new Xbox

I'm certain that that quote that said they were doing no more Halo actually stated they were doing no more Halo on the 360. I can't believe they wouldn't want to revisit it EVER.
If I'm honest, I trust that any dev that 343 would hire to make more FPS Halo games would do a great job of the campaign and story. But I trust noone to make as good a Halo MP game than Bungie.

I'm excited to see whether they can top the opening for ODST. That was f**king awesome! Especially with the surround sound whacked up!

My thinking of this (and hopes), are that 343 would handle games based around characters/genres not tied in with Master Chief's fate and Bungie will indeed handle the game that shows where MC ends up.

Me too. I want Bungie to revisit the MC and Cortana after Halo 3. That's a very interesting potential story, by the way. Was bought the Encyclopedia for my birthday the other week and it states in there that even decades after the end of the war people are searching for him. Looks like he won't be back on Earth any time soon...
But even if 343 do hire another good dev (Gearbox for example) to do a story from somewhere else in the universe, would their MP be anywhere near as good? It does concern me, but at least we'll have Reach and the next Bungie IP for my MP fix.

Is it worth getting?
I was dubious, and at the time I wouldn't have bought it for myself. But if I'd seen how good it is then I definitely would have done. You'd think it's quite pricey at £30 (edit: price dropped now to £20), but it's very broad-sheeted, full of amazing artwork and data (a good colation of previously-known info from the games and books, as well as new stuff that I've not heard about before). If you're into the Halo Universe as a story, then it's one of the better purchases you can make.
Also just had the Halo: Evolutions collection of short stories delivered. Only read a few so far, but already that's looking like a very worthwhile purchase too.

Cheers. Amazon are selling it for £19, so I'll jump on it and pick up Evolutions too.
So Bungie! What happened to the so called Halo 'movie'? It's not going to happen, and to be honest, I saw this one coming a mile away. The problem as i see it was a case of 'too many cooks'... Now Peter Jackson is a genius. Since Bad Taste and the birth of Wingnut Films, he has gone from strength to strength. Maybe his vision of a Halo movie was 'poo poo-ed' by the powers that be, ie (Microsoft/Bungie) but who knows. It is a shame becasue I think seeing Master Chief on the big screen had a lot of potential if Jackson was at the helm...Oh well, I suppose we do have the brilliant District 9...
