PSPs used to educate Navy

Handheld to serve as portable study stations (and not all as additional distractions) to failing soldiers
The Royal Navy has snapped up a few hundred PSPs for its Naval officers to study with (no, not by playing war sims).

With alarming numbers of soldiers failing exams and retaking courses, the Navy is hoping the 230 PSPs it's bought, which will run apps to let soldiers brush up on maths, listen to courses and practice on-screen tests, will be the answer to the problem of studying in cramped bunks out at sea.

Hilariously, Naval bosses decided not to disable the UMD drives so that soldiers, with the prospect of being able to play games on the their machines, will actually look after them, according to the Times Online. They won't be "accidentally" dropping them into the sea if they've almost found every sticker in LittleBigPlanet.

Of course, notebooks, touch-screen palm tops or even the DS wouldn't have been at all better for the job.

How very odd? Why not just get netbooks or cheap laptops? Surely it will cost them quite a bit to develop the apps for PSP?

Perhaps we can use one to educate Paradaz! Laughing

He has already demonstrated enough initiative to purchase a PS3 so seems there is perhaps hope for him yet...

Even the DS already has things like Brain Training Rolling Eyes

Which apparently may, or may not, train the brain. Empirical evidence appears to be lacking. My turn to type, "Ironic". Laughing

Still, I like to think that it may help some people and besides, there is a difference between not having found empirical evidence and being flat out false.

I am not sure it trains the brain as such, but it seems to certainly condition it. Many people seem to be far quicker at doing mental arithmetic after playing brain training for a while (me included). The more you practice sums the quicker the brain can generally do them. I am not sure it is going to give you extra skills though.

True, but then again that could be said about anything. Either way it's a debate I wanted to try and avoid and be saved for a different thread, as the point of this thread is about it being pointless for them to buy PSPs with custom software as they might as well buy a DS for cheaper which can do the same job Wink

And yes, even despite what its name might imply, I no way believe Brain Training games will make you smarter Razz
