DSi XL makes strong start in Japan

New model helps platform outsell all other systems combined last week
Nintendo's DSi XL (or 'LL' as it's known in the Far East) has made an impressive start in Japan, shifting just over 100,000 units in its debut weekend.

Media Create sales figures for the new handheld are consistent with those released by Famitsu publisher Enterbrain earlier this week. In comparison, DSi sold 170,000 in the same timeframe following its release last year, while Sony's PSPgo moved just over 28,000 units on November 1, the day of its Japanese release.

The DSi LL's success, along with relatively strong DSi sales, saw the DS platform outsell all other systems combined during the week ended November 22.

Despite a 4,000 unit drop in sales, PS3 remained one step ahead of the Wii, which saw sales rise by over 6,000 units.

Sales of Sony's PSPgo continued to decline, slipping 2,000 units to 4,574, just ahead of Xbox 360.

Hardware sales (last week):

DSi LL - 100,553 (n/a)
PS3 - 34,752 (38,498)
Wii - 32,844 (26,764)
PSP - 32,752 (38,770)
DSi - 32,070 (33,749)
DS Lite - 5,051 (5,036)
PSPgo - 4,574 (6,427)
Xbox 360 - 4,085 (4,124)
PS2 - 2,024 (2,031)

Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver lead the weekly software chart, with Nintendo platform titles taking the top five spots, while Left 4 Dead 2 and Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games debuted in sixth and ninth respectively.
