EA: We want Modern Warfare's crown

Between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, EA aims to reclaim FPS top spot, says CEO
EA's aiming to top Modern Warfare with its new Medal of Honor reboot and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, it says.

Speaking in an interview this morning, boss man John Riccitiello said EA's objective is to reclaim the FPS top spot that it once occupied with the former-WWII franchise.

"I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, but in the way that Activision sort of alternates sequels of Modern Warfare and Call of Duty and owns the leadership position in FPS [first-person-shooter], between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, I want it back," he told Kotaku. "And we're going to get there with innovation and quality."

One thing EA says it has over Infinity Ward with its game is - incredibly - multiplayer. "We think we've got an advantage over Modern Warfare 2 with our multiplayer," he said. "The guys at DICE do that really, really well.

"Frankly, once you get past, sort of, four people on a map, I think our gameplay is better," he added, boldly. "That is a legacy of DICE and where they came from. The original Battlefield PC was a 16-on-16 product and they've optimized. The other thing is, I think things like vehicles and destructible environments are a fresh innovation."

Shots have been fired. Frankly it's nice to see EA shouting about its quality ambitions again, and we're actually quite keen to see what this new Medal of Honor looks like.

Go on EA! Smile

They have officially declared war on Activision/IW for dominance of FPS, MOH box art looks cool as well

Frankly, it's good to see EA are now becoming a quality publisher releasing some top notch games. I have every faith they can supersede Activision and their evil nazi ways.

Very Happy Yes, a return of Medal of Honor! Ive never been a fan of FPS games but out of all the ones I have played these two series are the best. I think it is a shame though as they both are modern day shooters which means these two series will have to fight for my disc drive Shocked (shame). And the war between EA and Activision is on! Mad
cheesyfishface on 3 Dec '09
Ahhh so that's their plan...cos you know...I was puzzled about that.

Go get 'em EA! Give 'em hell! Very Happy
The_KFD_Case on 3 Dec '09
haha yeah i hope EA ram its boot knee deep into activisions ass!

I've been playing the BC2 beta a lot recently, I think they're already going to give MW a run for it's money.

They've got one hell of a job ahead of them. You know IW's success is largely down to the multiplayer, not to mention the controls on CoD are tight as f**k! Like I said, toppling IW will be no small feat.

BF2 is better than MW2 as it is, thanks to dedicated servers, vehicles, and 64 player maps. All it needs is some new shiny graphics and more urban maps that aren't dominated by aircraft. BF3 can't come too soon.

Absolutely, it's a real turn of events that we're all now looking at EA in this light.

They've released two of my favourite games this gen in the Fight Night series and I've even been persuaded to switch from PES to FIFA (which I never thought would happen).

Keep up the good work EA.

If that wink was to imply that I'd spelt feat incorrectly, you'd be mistaken. Wink

Good show to EA to be honest and I hope they succeed with their aims. It would be a brilliant start to 2010 for them if they could and would prove just how much they have improved themselves over the past year.

The things they need to remember though are a strong multiplayer for Bad Company (hopefully easily pulled off from past experiences) and a strong singleplayer for MOH (again hopefully easily pulled off from past experiences). Good luck to you EA and keep up the good work!

you wont get it back with innovation and quality, sadly.

thats what MW2 lacks.

for real gamers sakes though i hope they dont sell out to reach they kind of mass market sales.

I'm sorry but did I miss the memo.... I didn't know EA stopped being money grabbing whores. Activision may be king at saturation at the moment but are EA still releasing the same sports game each year? Yes, yes they are. What? Just because they release a couple of new IPs that will quickly be turned into franchises we are all now in EA's corner? f**k that thank you very much. Dead Space gets a lot of praise on here but it's just a resi ripoff if very shiny. Dante's Inferno looks to be a GOW rip off but instead of Greek mythology they decided to rape a poem instead.

Also however good Dragon Age is I don't appreciate NPCs trying to sell me DLC that should have been in the f**king game in the first place.

It's all about the money at the end of the day, some of you need to get some bloody perspective.

I still hate EA...Imaging charging £40 for Fifa 10 which to be honest is only a little cosmetically different from Fifa 09.

EA should be releasing a Fifa game every 4 years, they could easily make money in the 4 years between versions by charging for team updates, new stadiums, new team strips etc etc. 4 years also give EA time to iron out all the bugs and glitches that are always in any fifa game, well they never got rid of all the bugs in fifa 09 before fifa 10 came out.
funnyguy2001 on 3 Dec '09
ive played the bc2 online beta and tbh, its s**t. activision will always hav an edge on ea in fps.
Mackster-901 on 3 Dec '09
See, competition is a good thing.
kimoak on 4 Dec '09
To be honest I'm about to switch back to Battlefield 1943 for my fps needs. MW2 is a great game but 1943 is just way more satisfying in some ways.
