Why We Work

This week's "Casual Fridays" conversation looks at our motivation for working.

During last week’s introduction to our Casual Fridays feature, I was struck by the varied responses and comments.  I so greatly appreciate your chiming in with potential topic ideas and just generally being kind and supportive of one another.

This week, before we begin diving into specific topics, I would like to pose another rather general “getting to know you” type of query.  I’d love to know WHY... READ MORE

My Ten Commandments for Twitter

This week’s article on CNN about rocker Courtney Love’s legal woes for slamming a fashion designer on Twitter have me thinking about what laws God might have handed down to Moses had Twitter.com been the pervasive communications tool back then that it is these days.  No doubt, rather than having been inscribed upon stone tablets, the Lord’s laws would have been dictated in bite sized bullets of less... A new blog series focuses on work and career issues

This morning, I had the pleasure of attending the monthly breakfast meeting for our local Catholic Professional and Business Club.  The featured speaker, Enrico Hernandez, gave a fantastic talk on “Hiring Jesus of Nazareth as your Leadership Consultant”.  I left the meeting enthused and inspired about putting some of Rico’s suggestions to work in my own professional life.

I have reached the point... READ MORE

Cookies a la Carbon

http://www.made-in-china.com/showroom/souldgl/product-detailmqTEvJxdIaps/China-Charcoal-Briquettes.html

Arwen, Danielle & Rachel have shared their recipes recently, so I thought I’d share mine.

Here’s how to make charcoal briquettes from scratch.

1. Put your favorite cookie recipe in the oven. (Any recipe will do.)

2. While you are feeding his infant brother, have your toddler nephew press the “auto self clean” button on the oven—a process which cannot be interrupted once it has started.

3. Voila!

Be sure to enjoy the smell of char emanating from the kitchen the rest of the day.

I'm Not the Only One!

In which I make a fun discovery about my dad

My mother has an extraordinary memory. She routinely says things like, “Oh, yes, that was Harold Plinken. He sat two seats in front of me in third grade and used to pull the braids of Sally Davis who sat in front of him. Our teacher that year was Miss Swanwhite, and she later married Mr. Holt who taught science at the high school. They had three little girls and the youngest one, Barbara, married... READ MORE

What Month Is It, Again?

Our culture jumps the gun, Yuletide-wise

We were still in swine-flu quarantine over last weekend, but on Wednesday I made it to the grocery store and had the brilliant idea of checking to see if there was any leftover Halloween candy on sale.

A mere four days after Halloween, all evidence of it was completely gone. There was, however, plenty of Christmas candy.

I glanced around and realized that the store was loaded with Christmas decorations... READ MORE

Candy Confessions

We haven’t even gone trick or treating yet and already I have eaten a Kit Kat, a small package of Whoppers, and an entire bag of M&Ms.

There now, I feel better.

Any confessions you need to make today?

Happy Halloween!

Enjoy your treats!

Because She's Too Humble…

I'll point you to this wonderful article about Danielle...

I don’t want any of my fellow Danielle Bean Fan Club Members to miss out on this wonderful piece about everybody’s favorite Catholic Mom, written eloquently by her good friend and our Faith & Family colleague Elizabeth Foss.

In a rare move, Elizabeth has opened the comments on her blog so that you can share a few thoughts on what Danielle’s work and writing have meant to you in your mothering vocation. ... READ MORE
