And the 2009 TOTY nominees are...

NEW YORK—The Toy Industry Association today announced the finalists for the tenth annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards.
This year’s program has 12 categories, including ballots for infant toys and preschool toys, the first time those two product categories will be awarded as distinctly separate categories from each other. The toys that made the final ballot were selected by members of the TOTY Nominations Committee, a group comprised of industry professionals including major retailers, academics, toy industry journalists and full-time toy inventors. Committee members whittled down the final nominees from a list of initial candidates that rose this year by 18 percent from 2008 and were submitted by 120 distinct sponsors.
The program’s next step is to determine the winners by a vote of the TIA members and associate members (one vote per member organization). The ballot voting period runs through Jan. 12, 2010. Winners will be announced during the TOTY Awards presentation ceremony that will take place on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers/Pier 60 during the American International Toy Fair.
To help promote the nominated products, a dedicated consumer-centric website, www.ToyAwards.org, offers descriptions of each TOTY-nominated toy and links to each manufacturer’s website where visitors can access shopping information, among other features.
