Modern Warfare 2 gets dedicated servers (via hack)

Hackers give the public what they want
Activision wouldn't do it, so the PC hacking community has stepped up to deliver Modern Warfare 2 dedicated servers.

You can see the hacked solution in action below, complete with all the usual low gravity and insta-grenade mischief that prove Infinity Ward's matchmaking police have been well and truly removed.

"Thanks to AgentGOD and his great work bringing the developer console back into the PC version, a whole new wave of servers are possible with vast amounts of customisation," reads the YouTube description.

"Things such as unlimited ammo, massive experience points (10000xp for a single kill), Field of View tweaks, speed and gravity adjustments and so much more! The best bit is, this is all ranked and on IWNet! I guess the game is no longer balanced to fuck the PC gamers over!"

We give it 24 hours before Infinity Ward gets wind of this and it all gets nasty...

Okaaaayyy...

So you hack MW2 so that you can make it play like Unreal Tournament?

Alot of people see this as just 'a bit of fun' which if it stayed as what we see in this video then I suppose it is.

But it never just stays as it is, modders keep pushing and pushing and don't know when to stop.

Talk about sticking it to the man! lol

This was bound to happen anyway wasn't it? PC gamers would not lie down with no dedicated servers and so did it themselves

Good on em Smile

sweet, MW2's worth getting on the PC now. Activision should be thanking them.

the fact 2 or three guys managed to do this in less than a week, yet IW, with more than a month had a pettition with over 200,000 signatures, and yet .. they did nothing. GJ to this guy!

I couldn't agree more! Stick it to the man good fellas! Very Happy I think a hearty "YEEEEE" and "HAW!" is in order! Laughing

Exactly, and this is why all these so called anti-piracy/obsessive control freak "solutions" are a complete and utter waste of time and resources. It does nothing but create hate from all sides. The customers hate the companies for harming their gaming experience, the companies hate the pirates (and apparently the customers too), the pirates hate the companies (and some of them hate customers too) and on and on it goes.

I love the PC platform for the huge amount of freedom it offers those who know how to play the programmers' game and I am extremely grateful to those whom, for a variety of reasons, freely offer to share their abilites with those of us whom have chosen different vocations. I don't mind paying a more or less fair price for a product, yet I do mind being screwed over by corporate interests and when one of the few ways to fight back effectively seems to be in the form of the hackers and pirates, then I say lead the charge boys n' girls! Give 'em hell!

If you can use cheat codes in the game and still get a multiplayer ranking, they surely that's just cheating and not fair to the other PC players? Confused
richardnewns on 17 Nov '09
Second that - whilst this gives us the freedom we want, at the same time it stupidly manages to be exactly what activision claim they are defending against - ie cheating. I don't want to play against folk who have the best weapons because they unlocked the entire weapons list in one match.
battles_atlas on 17 Nov '09
I'll third that too. Modding for fun is one thing, modding to cheat the system is something else entirely. If they were going to put crazy stuff in, they should have also disabled the connection to the ranking servers.
Dajmin on 17 Nov '09
That's brilliant.
le_don on 17 Nov '09
I don't agree with cheats either and this is something that can be removed for me, BUT...the very fact that he reintroduced the console and got dedicated servers to work is the big thing here

You are missing the point. IW didn't do it because they don't want to do it.
The modders have proved it can be done but just watch IW release a patch to lock it down so that it is impossible again.

IW have clearly spent all their efforts in making a uniform gaming experience irrespective of platform, but unfortunately based on the console model. You can tell that absolutely no effort was spent on the PC version and IW.net is a glorified Xbox Live port for the PC. Forget IW and move on to developers who are interested in the PC platform.
Quercus on 17 Nov '09
It's too bad some other players may suffer at the "cheating" hands of those whom have found a way to beat IW and Activision at their own game. Personally I have zero sympathy. If other PC gamers don't want to be "cheated" against then they can surely find a way to join in on the fun.

As for the console user that's just too bad. IW/Activision should have thought of that before defecating all over the PC community. Dedicated servers should never have been disabled to start with simply so IW could hide behind some flimsy "equal (lack off) quality online experience" argument which I strongly suspect has far more to do with locking down any modding so they can charge for new maps, etc. true to Activision's public policies. Suck it hard b!tches!
The_KFD_Case on 17 Nov '09
How ever did IW manage to take one of the most loved games, and managed to produce a (according to most people) pretty darn good sequel, and then STILL manage to come across as utter c**ts, and alienate the players?

I'm skipping MW2 for now - I want to play MW and MW2 as a shooter, not as a "someone has a magic chopper that kills you as you spawn 200 times in a row" snow-scooter-arcade-sim.

If I can't choose for myself to play on - or create - servers that let me modify the gaming experience (within reasonable limits, I don't want cheating), then IW aren't getting my green.

There's a Valve-game coming out today that has been preordered for quite some time, and I can't wait to go home, and fire up Steam and hit "play now".

How I desparately wanted to like MW2. I really want to play the singleplayer and CoOp. But for now, it's just not worth the money, when MP has been tuned to the requirements of arcade-console-kiddies.

Totally agree. Dedicated servers without all the cheats would work for those that bought the game (not me I might Add). I still see Activision calling in the Lawyers if the Dedicated servers persist.
ronin Ithikus on 17 Nov '09
So all this fuss about no dedicated servers had nothing to do with lag or poor connection speed or anything like that, which I'd understand and support.

It was because you couldn't cheat at the game......

What a bunch of whiney b**ches PC gamers are!!!

I'll stick to my 360 for my FPS fun thanks. Where balanced, none hacked gameplay ensures that skill is what determines how your ranked, and not some zip file written by a bespectacled, 34 year old, virgin, IT consultant from Milton Keynes.

It's this kind if thing that makes companies like IW and Activision consider dropping the PC as a format. When MW3 becomes a console exclusive it'll be only you to blame and no one else.
OptimusFrag on 17 Nov '09
The hacker is a f*ckwit. Anyone who cheats or helps others cheat is a f*ckwit. Activision and Infinity Ward were absolutely correct to take away the control of servers (and cheating) from the gamers. And this proves it without a shadow of a doubt. I can't wait 'til the PC market start to lose some major titles because of their hacking and pirating attitudes.

The software publishers need to work together and collectively stop producing games for the PC. Eventually they wouldn't lose too much money as the PC would be dead of all but the bedroom programmer games.
Jensonjet on 17 Nov '09
I don't think PC gamers were really upset that they couldn't cheat, as has already been proven there is always a way to cheat. You can get an "Evil" controller for the xbox360 that allows for faster reloads and rapid fire. Isn't that cheating on a console, since it gives you an unfair advantage over other players. I don't want an Xbox or PS3, in fact I sold my Xbox360 a year ago, because I never played it. Because I can run almost any game thats on 360 on my computer using a 360 controller if I so desire. And since it's on a computer I get better graphics and the ability to use dedicated servers (in most cases), making for a better gaming experience. Yeah PC gamers complained, and petitioned, but they got over that and invented their own solution. It's the envious console gamers that are whinning now! If you are a console gamer why would you even care about any of this anyways? I don't agree with cheating and hate when you can blatantly tell that somebody is cheating, but now that there isn't any in-game RCON I can't kick/ban cheaters anymore! As good a move as IW thought this was it was obviously a step backward and p**sed off a bunch of people, they are getting what they deserve. They should have left all of these decisions in the hands of server administrators running dedicated servers. I'm not gonna say there wouldn't be cheating anymore but at least it would be in the hands of the community. The only thing that would keep IW from adding dedicated servers now is that they have put too much time and money into IWNET and that they would have to admit that they were wrong. I don't think the hacker is a "f*ckwit" I think he just wanted to prove that IW was wrong and that removing dedicated servers and rcon wouldn't keep anybody from cheating or being able to cheat. Now IW is just going to spend more and more money on releaseing new patches every week to combat the new hackers. I don't see the hackers backing down either they will just keep on coming, ban them and they will just create a new account with a new workaround.
Prv8J0k3r on 17 Nov '09
I strongly disagree with anyone who says PC gamers want dedicated servers solely to cheat. The majority of PC gamers appreciate the freedom of choice dedicated servers gives them (hence the reason clan communities form) and its especially good for major gaming events such as the I-Series

Its the small minority of people who enjoy hacking and these are the guys who can f**k right off - they hack because they can't play the game fairly and/or won't learn how to play it and gain some skill at it. Lazy bastards.

I respect the guy who did this only for the fact he got the console and dedicated servers working on MW2 when IW/Activision said it had been removed. I don't like the fact he used cheats at all but modders can easily do workarounds to prevent this i'm sure

As for consolers who complain about PC gamers moaning about it - why bother? do you think anything would get done if people didn't speak up? I don't think so. I've seen some mods be better than the original game and it allows people to be creative.

And as far as OptimusFrag's comment about MW3 being console-exclusive cos PC gamers complained too much - I doubt this would ever happen for a start and even if it did, Bad Company 2 is waiting for us. EA played it nicely by allowing dedicated servers on their game and it practically guarantees the PC gamers who hated MW2 transferring to it

<Snip console fanboy drivel>

Feel free to keep on telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. Those of us who have taken the time to get a clue about what was, and remains at stake, may find your gargantuan lack of comprehension - willful or otherwise - coupled with that fortress-foundation-sized chip on your shoulder quite amusing I'm sure. I know I do. Laughing

The door is that way... *points to exit*

P.S. Just FYI, if you are truly interested in "fairness" then you could never truly support non-dedicated server gaming in favour of matchmaking since it automatically grants an unfair advantage to the hosting machine as less time will pass between commands issued and received compared to the those of the other players that are playing on non-host machines. That one's for free. Wink

By all means! You would end up seeing your precious consoles stop dead in their tracks regarding "new" hardware developments. That stuff comes from the PC world and so too do the latest and greatest software concepts. Read 'em and weep boys! Laughing

Oh, and piracy and cheating surely doesn't exist on consoles, right? Oh wait. Didn't MS just issue a statement about being "unapologetic" in regards to banning upwards of a million Xbox 360 users?... Rolling Eyes

Yep, pretty much and that goes for everything you typed in that post.
The_KFD_Case on 17 Nov '09
A lot of people are missing the point here, the fact that someone has created dedicated servers is just sticking two fingers up to IW/Activision who wanted to control everything and have their own way....ultimately to get more money as they would be the only people who could create/distribute additional content.

The whole argument for dedicated servers is that whoever is managing the server lays down the law. If they want certain maps in the rotation, certain rules, the ability to kick/ban cheaters etc then they can......MW2 as it is now does not give that control to anyone....and the game suffers for it.
Paradaz - UK on 17 Nov '09
I am sure most of us seen this coming from a mile off. I know I did. Activision basically threw down the gauntlet to modders by removing dedicated servers and the modders themselves took it... and slapped them around the face after blowing their nose on them Smile

Great, way to go and stick it to Activision/IW!
Shame it'll probably mean no more COD games on PC in the future, but good job anyway(slow clapping noise). Rolling Eyes

Again, I doubt this would happen. They're practically handing PC game sales to EA for games like Bad Company 2.

If this is all IW/Activision have to offer the PC crowd in the future then I'd rather go without and see other developers muscle in on what is currently IW/Activision territory. Good riddance to lousy concepts.
The_KFD_Case on 18 Nov '09
Brilliant!

One issue that many people seem to be missing is that this video is clearly showing the extreme end of the possibilities of customization.

And I read someone’s post earlier about dedicated severs being a place for cheaters? Quite contrary to the truth. IW.net has shown that it is the place for cheaters to be unchallenged. Unlike in dedicated severs.

Area51 being the best MW1 sever around - never let a cheaters stay, neither do the others I play on.

So this is Robert Bowling’s (AKA: fourzerotwo) official personal website/blog:

http://www.fourzerotwo.com/?page_id=175

He leaves all of his gamertags, twitter, facebook, and a couple of other contacts and plenty of forum space for people to ask questions or leave comments. I feel like we are just leaving our comments on the wrong forums and that everybody should well...just thank him personally on his own site for his hard work in figuring out what gamers want and how best to implement it. It's funny because if you look like 90 weeks ago all the posts are "Hey Robert you're so awesome I'm gonna be playing XBox later on tonite we should play something together!" and they leave their gamertag so that he can "find" them. Then if you look a couple of days to a couple of weeks ago, well not so pretty, but they gave me a chuckle...here is a highlight reel:

This one was by "I am p**sed off" and I'm not sure what face aids is but it doesn't sound pleasant-

"Thanks for f*cking over the very people who have supported you from the very start.

I hope you die of face aids you pr*ck.

You may have fooled alot of people into buying MW2 but trust me if you dare release another disaster like this for the PC it wont f*cking be touched.

Rant over.

Dice>IW"

and this one by "Milkshakes" -

"F*ck you man, f*ck you and IW/Activision. You will rue the day that you ignored the people that made you who you are today. BTW, your credentials sound like some business MBA who has to stuff his pants in the morning to feel good."

You get the idea, now I figure that some of those 220,000 people that signed the petition might want to just say hey to Bob.

P.S. - I find it ironic that under "Things I Hate" he lists Douchebags.
