Facebook confirmed for PS3 Firmware 3.10

Photos and Friends List update too - video inside
Sony's confirmed last week's leaked news, that Facebook will be incorporated into PS3 via the next firmware update, 3.10. And the news comes on the day Xbox Live gets its social networking too - coincidence?

"By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity," says the PlayStation Blog.

"This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3's built-in web browser," it says.

"This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates."

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

  • The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
  • The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

For a further preview of what's coming in update 3.10, check out the video below:

shiwayb on 17 Nov '09
Very nice indeed and yup its free. Not sure why you have to be a gold member on 360 to gain access to facebook?????
bennyboi1979 on 17 Nov '09
Just update the web browser for fecks sake you numbnuts.
lawless1891 on 17 Nov '09
I can't stand facebook, but can see why this is important for the PS3. Glad it's hidden away though so it's easy to ignore.

The changes to the photo layout are spot on though.
robbiej55 on 17 Nov '09
and this will be out when exactly....?
Windy on 17 Nov '09
Facebook and fiddling with colours. Oh wow.
I'm just waiting when they fix the divx/xvid playback, so it'd actually play all of those files correctly.
jukkiz on 17 Nov '09
I'm not a huge fan of facebook but I'd sooner game and trophy related status updates rather than the usual "Britains got talent, X factor, the twins, Jordans a whore, or now the im a celeb get me out of here related ones." but what you expect for free Laughing
gogo65uk on 17 Nov '09
Fair update, although I'm really only interested in the photo mode improvements. I absolutely love the photo mode on the PS3 (especially now that I have about a trillion photos of my daughter on there!) and any improvements are welcome.

Oh, and being able to get rid of the grey friends box is also welcome. I would rather it not portray the weather. Laughing

Pretty cool.

You know it's funny, I was on Facebook the other day and I asked everyone (via status update) for 360 and PSN screennames, and now this is coming out for both, meaning that both accounts will be linked to FB and it will probably give that sort of information on profiles of friends that have linked up too!

One good thing that comes out of this at least.
DevilsNeverCry on 17 Nov '09
can't stand facebook, wish there was an option not to have it on the xmb. i do like the customisation for the profiles, i'm big on faffing with colours and s**t so it will be fun.
Sinthetic on 17 Nov '09
Don't use Facebook, but the colour thing is alright.
THX-1138 4EB on 17 Nov '09
Well this is a useful update for me, I use Facebook a lot and due to only having one internet access point in my room cant run the ps3 and Mac online at the same time. Hopefully Chat will work on this though, otherwise its pointless.
DAEDALUS79 on 17 Nov '09
Pointless if the IM doesn't work. And considerin there is no mention of it im guessin it doesn't.
spud-o on 17 Nov '09
Facebook is dull, but some will love it.

New friend list is essential. How did they not get this right with 3.00? Better late than never I guess
stickyfiddle on 17 Nov '09
I hope this is an Optional FW release?

Plus Never mind this crap, when are you releasing the new video store and Spanish style IPlayers?
Barca Azul on 17 Nov '09
you serious? thats it? no browser updates, no cross game chat or party chat, no in game web browsing, no in game music players or better/faster download speeds, nothhing inspirational? we get facebook and the ability to change a colour?! wooah im bent over backwards in bloody amazement....not! sony sort it out
bunneyo on 17 Nov '09
I'm just waiting when they fix the divx/xvid playback, so it'd actually play all of those files correctly.

If you are having problems playing DivX movies then go to the system menu and select the DivX option, the process takes about 10 minutes and you need a PC I think to enable it.

Also as far as facebook goes, although I wont use it very much on my PS3 - by linking it to your trophies and PSN, I'm sure there will be a lot of people that do.
only_777 on 17 Nov '09
Plus Never mind this crap, when are you releasing.....Spanish style IPlayers?

Do the Spanish equivalent of the BBC do an online free TV service?
As far as I know there is no television licence in Spain so I can't think there is a Spanish iPlayer, so I can't see Sony adding a service that is not there into the FW.
If your feeling down you can goto http://www.free-tv-video-online.info/ through the PS3 internet browser
only_777 on 17 Nov '09
no in game music players......sony sort it out

In game music was done last xmas. But its down the the game dev to allow it in there game. See Motorstorm 2 if you want to see this feature in action.
only_777 on 17 Nov '09
Killzone 2 allows in game music ,sabbath is my most popular choice but Jeff Waynes war of the worlds is real good.

No actually, try reading from the OXM site here:
http://www.oxm.co.uk/article.php?id=13470

All the PS3 facebook features do is post Trophy and Store purchases onto your profile page. But if you actually bothered to watch the video (here: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=227429 ) you would of known this, plus you would also know that Sony have improved the browser so Facebook works ok now.

Try actually doing research instead of running in like a fanboy.
only_777 on 17 Nov '09

I presume you have a wired connection from your access point?....A dumb switch could be your best friend....100Mb is fine for gaming (as your router will undoubtedly have 100Mb ethernet ports.

If you would need do any file transfers....streaming/music/films etc between PS3 and laptop (via the Switch) then get a Switch with Gig Ports (worth it imo).

Job done.
