Left 4 Dead 2 DLC detailed?

PC demo files name potential add-on packs
Left 4 Dead 2's future downloadable content packs could have already been named, if mentions in the PC demo files are anything to go by.

The 'Miracle Pack' and 'Apocalyptic Pack' are both named in the demo files, alongside mentions of the original Left 4 Dead survivors, who will presumably be up for selection and some point in the sequel.

It's not the first revelation clever PC gamers have extracted from the demo either: Xbox 360 Avatar Awards were uncovered earlier this week, including unlockable frying pans and t-shirts for Xbox 360 players.

The Left 4 Dead 2 demo is currently available to pre-order customers only, but will go public November 3. Have a look at our Left 4 Dead 2 videos.

Great if we get to play as the original survivors, I think they are better characters than the new ones personally. However I obviously haven't played as them yet, I could warm to them.

On the DLC side of things, people could go two ways; being pleased that support for L4D2 is already planned or believing that Valve truly have turned into a money grabbing company and should just release this planned content with the retail copy.

I would have supported Valve trying to get as much money as possible due to the current financial climate, but with the news over the past few days that america is pulling its big ugly head out of the recession and making profits. I'm indifferent and not bothered. I think it's good that they have things planned to work on.

money grabbing is something i'd never accuse valve of being. So far all the dlc on the PC version at least has been free, and its been sold for the bare minimum on the 360 with most of the profits going to MS.

They even made L4D2 with the modding community in mind so that they could continue to use custom maps made by the community for free.

If any company is undeserving of the bad press they've gotten recently. It's valve.

I don't think you understand the argument about Valve being money-grabbing. As I understand it, here's why people have a problem with Valve:

1. Left4Dead is essentially a 3.5-4 hour game. Forget the fact it's co-op and if you enjoy co-op has potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay. Any co-op game has that potential. The fact is Left4Dead is possibly the shortest full price first-person shooter ever!

2. Left4Dead is based on an old game engine. It has very little content – the smallest selection of weapons, the fewest maps, barely any characters (playable or otherwise).

3. The game has clearly gone the sports-game route of yearly updates and to appease those that were upset, Valve threw together half a chapter and sold it as the promised DLC. Also from what I understand it was full of problems and glitches.

While none of the above distracts from how much fun you may have had with a game, if games were valued on how much fun they are and not the content and execution, you could argue many games are worth two or three times their cost, and plenty are barely worth paying for at all.

In short Left4Dead is an overpriced mod that's marketed and sold as a full game. It's an Xbox Live arcade game at best. If you love the game you're probably blind to the anti-Valve argument. While I have enjoyed the game, I still believe it to be one of the biggest rip-offs I've purchased. Games I've ended up disliking soon after purchase were because of personal taste and were still more worthy of their cost because the developers at least gave gamers plenty of content/new game engines/lots of choice or game modes, etc.

The best DLC is stuff that expands on what gamers enjoy most in your product. So how can you come up with that before the game is released? Confused

I'd like to see you complete the game in 4 hours on Advanced or Expert.

I couldn't disagree with you more.

To call L4D a 'Mod' is ignorance, and does not show a clear understanding about what elements of game developement take time and which, comparitively do not. If Valve are this so called money grabbing comapny which PS3 fanboys (I am not saying you are one btw) would have them labeled, why did they release the orange box? They could have easily released that as 2 or even 3 seperate packages and earned more money.

I agree with you to a certain degree that L4D is indeed short, content wise, but do not forget that this is the first time a Zombie apocolype online game has been released and as a result, the company had to gauge whether there was a market for it or not.

Also, your argument that the amount of time i have spent playing it is irrelevant is simply not true. How can you possibly discount that as being a valid point?! I spent 8 hours playing Dead Space all in all (which I love btw) but have spent literally hundreds of hours on L4D! No other online game has had me playing it as much, and that includes MW + Halo 3.

Regarding the engine, the majority of the block buster games released over the past 3 years have been based on the Unreal engine. Who cares how old the thing is if it does its job properly?

And for the final f**king time, Valve did not want to charge for the DLC! That decision was Micro softs, hence why it was free on PC. Also, it was not 'full of bugs' at all. It had a few glitches which have since been sorted out.

I have had so much fun playing L4D and i can honestly say that for punds spent -> fun had, it is by far and away the most valueble thing I have ever purchased, except perhaps the Technics Stero I bought 12 years ago.

An xbox live arcade game at best?

Well what is Geometry Wars then? As you can go through that in 10 minutes.

You can go the way of large content or making it dynamic and different every time, getting the content from replayability. L4D is all about being dynamic and fun and different, and that is why people can easily spend as long on it as some people do on Oblivion or massive content filled games. It's like a multiplayer game, you're playng with other people and anything can happen; you don't know which enemies you'll come across or where they'll be. As I said, it's like a multiplayer game, only the maps are 10 times larger than even the biggest multiplayer games, and there are 20 of them. If you don't enjoy playing online on co-op then it's not your cup of tea, but if you don't like racing games then Forza and GT won't be games for you, it doesn't make them any worse though.

It's based on an old engine? So what, it still looks and feels great. Lost Coast was released over 4 years ago and still looks better than half the games released now. Half the games now are using the Unreal engine which is almost as old as the Source engine, not to mention that engines get changed so much and improved so much that this is completely different to the HL2 engine. Valve even have a team who have been working just on the Source engine and constantly upgrading it.

And as for the yearly update. Well L4D2 has twice as many types of enemies, a completely new setting with no bits from the previous game. It has three times as many weapons as the original including a new form of combat with the melee weapons. There are twice as many game modes as were in the original. Not to mention that the Director is now vastly improved and can control which route you take and the weather effects. How is that jsut a yearly update?

Well we don't actually know if these are DLC packs or perhaps something which is included in the full game and seeing as no one has seen the full game yet I certainly wouldn't be jumping to conclusions just yet.

I think from playing the demo last night everything about this game justifys the full release, better gore, better advances on the engine, better AI etc. I think we should take a step back and stop abusing Valve and calling them money grabbing etc. End of the day they want to support us and I stand by them. This will be a brilliant game and whether DLC is being planned now or not I can see this game getting far more support than the original.
