Practicing Science -- With or Without Religion?
The problem for the working scientist is that the essence of science is a self-conscious and mandatory objectivity -- which means dogma and doctrine are essentially antithetical.

Dr. Dawkins is one of what I call the Bishops of Atheism, people spreading the gospel of non-god. To him anyone who believes in God is delusional.
Benedict says disenfranchised rappers and Anglicans should feel at home in the Catholic Church given its unwavering stance on women and homosexuality.
Only in the western mind does the existence of deity contradict science, and truth be told, not even there. There is nothing in western scientific thought that denies deity.
We know her as Blossom, that spunky adolescent on that eponymous sitcom. But since the series ended in 1995, Mayim Bialik, now 33, has truly blossomed.
Are our morals dictated to us by a supreme entity, or do discoveries made by science and reason make Atheism a natural conclusion? You decide.
One of the main concerns people of faith will be lifting up this year is the need for health care legislation that assures real reform of our broken and inadequate child health system.
In my division at DU of over 70 professors, I can count the number of tenure-track faculty of color on one hand. In DU's service and maintenance position ranks, the demographics are reversed.
I was raised a good old fashioned Christian. But, alas, living in New York has converted me into a faithful follower of two other religions: Fashion and Food.
Other countries are on a future trajectory to out-compete us in science and technology. It's hugely unpatriotic to do nothing in the face of moneyed interests pushing superstition into the classroom.
The litany of sectarian killings that has been such a grotesque piece of America's "hidden history" is the reason that some of the Framers thought the First Amendment was so necessary.
Justice Scalia is right that it's intended to honor all the war dead. The problem is the assumption that you honor all war dead by putting up the religious symbols honored by some.

I wonder about whether the team favors religious players every time I see another Rocky show his faith by crossing himself or pointing upward after a base hit.
If we distort the framework of nondiscrimination for religious organizations it privileges prejudice. We would, in the name of separating church and state, give the church license to harm our state.

Time to dust off my Union Theological Seminary creds and weigh in on prayer.

The Muslim women leaders I've spoken to do not say, "Please tell the West to save us." They are too busy making egalitarian, modernist new worlds of their own, with an Arab, and often Islamic, imprimatur.
I have a persecution complex. I'm afraid of speaking my truth. I don't believe in mainstream. I'm not impressed with fluff or fun or fanfare.
All too often, however, spirituality reinforces rather than transcends conventional limits, boundaries, and notions of the ego. Sandwiched in between manicures and lunch dates, the quickie yoga class becomes just another way to augment and reinforce the self.

In these times, that billboard is like a breath of fresh air! And I'm a person who takes comfort in talking to my "higher power".
Love it!

As an agnostic, I respect people's rights, which is not the same as saying I respect their beliefs.
I'm thinking of putting up a billboard, for theists and atheists alike, which states simply, "where's your evidence?"
To be truly Agnostic one must believe that the chance of god is exactly 50%. Atheist "proof" to not be an Agnostic is that there is the assumption that the chance of there being a god is far less than the chance there is not a god. (See: Russell's Teapot). Many, and I would go so far as to say most, Atheists do not absolutely know or believe there is no god. Just that there is no evidence to support the fact. And until evidence is provided Atheists will assume there is no god.
Keep god out of my country's laws! They can keep their religious morality to themselves.
It will be interesting to watch how Christians who support enacting laws derived from their religious beliefs react when the expanding population of Muslim citizens begins to do the same.
Beware my Christian brethren of opening a door you will one day regret.
Opening a door is akin to lifting the veil.
Apocalypse (Greek: ?ποκάλυ?ις Apokálypsis; "lifting of the veil" or "revelation") is a term applied to the disclosure to certain privileged persons of something hidden from the majority of humankind.
Self fulfilling prophecies blow!
