'Project Runway': Episode 12 recap

WENN

The five remaining designers on Project Runway take part in a challenge that determines who goes to New York Fashion Week on this week's episode.

Last week's winner Althea Harper says that she and castmate Irina Shabayeva "aren't really speaking, because she's accused me of copying".

Heidi Klum previously asks both contestants during the runway show who came up with the idea for an oversized sweater, which Althea claims that she did.

"I'm very competitive and I'm very outspoken. I've also said that I won't say anything behind your back that I wouldn't say to your face," Irina notes of the incident.

The last remaining male designer Christopher Straub admits that "it's a little lonely in the boys' room".

Klum informs the competitors that "Fashion Week is at your fingertips" and that the last Los Angeles-based task will be based on "an iconic place that's rich in culture".

They meet Tim Gunn at the J. Paul Getty Museum, which he describes as being "the heart of Los Angeles culture". He introduces Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, which makes Carol Hannah Whitfield state that the assignment must be "a very serious thing".

Their challenge is unveiled and is essentially a design of their choice, using the Getty Centre as inspiration from its architecture, views and "galleries filled with riches". They take a 30-minute tour, using their models as "muses", and are given the same amount of time to sketch.

Christopher and Althea find inspiration in an architectural tact for their designs, while Irina and Gordana Gehlhausen both opt to recreate paintings. Carol Hannah plans to replicate elements from an ornate French bed.

They head off to fabric store Mood for the final time this season with a $300 budget for the two-day challenge.

Back in the workroom, Gunn reminds them to "take risks" during this particular make-or-break assignment. Althea notes that the tension in the room is "awkward" as everyone else has struck up friendships and she feels "alone".

Gunn stops in for his critiques and informs Irina that the fur portion of her dress is "looking a lot like road kill". He tells Gordana that he "sees the painting" in her outfit. Before he exits, he reminds them of the gravity of the challenge .

The day of the runway show arrives, and Klum joins judges fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, Marie Claire's Nina Garcia and supermodel Cindy Crawford. She tells participants that three of them will be going to Bryant Park, while the remaining two will be sent home.

Irina, Carol Hannah and Althea make it through to New York, and though Gordana is praised for being "closest to the inspiration", she is "out". As is Christopher, who says the garment "speaks" more about him than anything else he has designed for the reality show.
