N-Dubz

Since the release of debut album Uncle B last November, N-Dubz have converted their underground following into bona fide mainstream success. They've bagged a chart-topper with Tinchy Stryder on 'Number One', sold out a 23-date UK tour, and recently picked up MOBOs for Best Album and Best UK Act. As they prepare to release follow-up platter Against All Odds, we hooked up with Dappy - enjoying a lunch of fried chicken and rice at the time - to find out more.

What can we expect from your new album?
"You can expect some smashers. It's got an epic and clubby sound with lots of powerful songs that were all produced by us. It's a very personal record in that we did it all in the studio by ourselves. The songs are like our children and we're very protective over them."

How did you come up with the name Against All Odds?
"(Late manager and Dappy's father) Uncle B wanted us to call the first album Against All Odds, but when he died we decided to call it Uncle B instead. That's why this time around we chose that name. It's not got anything to do with Phil Collins because we're not into copying other people."

You wrote a song with Gary Barlow for the album. What's it like?
"Yeah, he's got a heavy schedule with Take That but he came to the studio and wrote a song with us. It's called 'No One Knows' and if you don't listen to it, you'll be missing out. It's a hip-hop banger but very musical."

You also worked with Mr Hudson. What can we expect from that collaboration?
"It's called 'Playing With Fire' and it's going to be our next single. There's a lot of tension in it. If you've been in a heartbreaking relationship, you'll be able to relate to it. It's about being a good liar and it's very sexual too, so ladies get ready!"

Are you planning on taking the album all the way to No.1?
"Me, Fazer and Tulisa never really think about getting a No.1. Of course we'd like one, but it's more about making the music, doing a show and seeing all these people singing along to the lyrics. If it does well in the charts, that's just a bonus man."

A lot of your mates have made it to the top spot this year...
"Yeah, we didn't know how to feel when 'Number One' went all the way. It's great and now everyone's doing it - Tinchy, Chipmunk, Wiley, Dizzee. They're opening doors."

Did you enjoy shooting the video for new single 'I Need You'?
"Yeah, big up to our director Rage who came from America to make the video. He's done some quality videos over there and made our one look big and phat. It still feels very British though."

You've really crossed over into the mainstream this past year. Was it hard work?
"Yeah and we never get a chance to stop. Our management's doing a great job and we're not looking back. Whatever achievements we get, we just keep on going. Getting the two best awards at the MOBOs was awesome, but there's no stopping there. We want a Brit now."

Have you found time to buy any quality bling?
"Well, I've got some nice diamonds and it makes me feel cool. I never used to like them, but when you go on TV and you see real diamonds blinging, you just think, 'Wow'. We're working on making an N-Dubz pendant actually, so watch this space."

Have you managed to bag yourself a celebrity girlfriend along the way?
"Not Peaches Geldof! Get that down for the record now. Cheryl Cole would get it though. I'm paired up with someone, but I do what I want. I've got love for her, but I do what I want."

What do you think of the new Sugababes lineup?
"It's not the Sugababes any more is it? Still, they shouldn't call it a day because the group is dynamite now. It would be good if they had Mutya and Keisha in there, but Jade Ewen has a smashing vocal. You've got Amelle and Heidi and they're smashing too, but it's not Sugababes."

Tinchy collaborated with Amelle this summer. Would you try something similar?
"Yeah, me and Fazer would collaborate with them, but in a different way... haha! How does their new tune go? Yeah, it's sick."

N-Dubz release new single 'I Need You' on November 9. The album Against All Odds follows on November 16.
