Radio Football Commentators and Reporters 2009-2010

This kicks off the new forum for the upcoming season. A good starting point will be to put in any known (or even forecasted) news regarding national and local coverage of the new season.

One station that has now disappeared is Radio Hampshire so there will be (at present) no Southampton coverage in the commercial radio sector.

Good place to start might be to ask if anyone knows if there's been any "transfers" so far this summer, with match commentators and summarisers moving from one station to another in the close season.

Surely the station which saw the most movement when it comes to their commentary team during the season just ending is BBC Radio Derby.

Not only did regular Derby County summariser Dean Sturridge, who'd only been in the role for one season after the acrimonious departure of Ted McMinn, leave Radio Derby to become a co-commentator on Sky Sports' Football First at the start of the season, they also lost Rams commentator Ross Fletcher a few months ago.

Ross left the station to work on East Midlands Today and Radio Five Live, and has since been replaced by Marc Vesty.

Then last month Sturridge's successor as Rams summariser, Gary Rowett, quit the station to become Paul Peschisolido's assistant at Burton Albion.

Speaking of Burton Albion, I wonder how Radio Derby will cover the Brewers now they are a Football League side?

In the past, they have been treated vastly second fiddle to Derby, and generally their games are covered by reports from Charles Collins during Rams coverage.

Now they are in the league, I wonder if the coverage they get will increase?

Perhaps they could split the frequencies on Saturdays and say put Rams commentary on Radio Derby FM and Burton commentary on Radio Derby AM?

I think Ross Fletcher is just covering somebody on maternity leave at East Midlands Today, so will presumably return for the start of the new football season.

Their coverage of Burton will be interesting. Up until now they have done full commentary on the Brewers, but only online. That option will now dissappear I would have thought, radio stations aren't allowed to stream football commentaries of league clubs on their websites, so I suppose the only optiopn for Radio Derby is to put it on their 1116 AM frequency.

Agree it's not a surprise, but I wonder what this will mean for the old SGR FM (now Heart Ipswich) commentary team.

A Heart-branded station isn't the kind of station who I imagine would bother with airing football reports, and with BBC Radio Suffolk having its own ITFC commentary team (none of whom, I think, moved last summer when rights were lost), there would be no massive vacancies for the football broadcasters to follow the rights.

A shame these guys are probably out of a job. Of the old SGR team, I don't think Mark Scott (their main commentator) will have much trouble resurfacing on another station covering football.

Mark used to be one of the main sports reporters and an occasional anchorman on the Capital Gold London's sports strand until making the move to East Anglia last summer.

From what I remember, he sounded very good and professional - it wouldn't surprise me if he either returned to a major commercial station as a commentator or became an IRN reporter next term.

Interesting stuff John, was going to ask you if you were sure about that but a quick Google search shows me others on this site have outlined that he's on a bit of a sabbatical from the station to cover someone on East Midlands Today.

However I'm a little bit confused about his situation. I can understand why they'd bring in a substitute for him on the drivetime show (who, incidentally, is Colin Bloomfield - a former BBC Radio Shropshire, WM and Radio Stoke football commentator/reporter) if they needed him on East Midlands Today, but I'm not sure why he'd need to stop doing Derby County games because of this - seeing as on most Saturday's since he "left" Radio Derby he's been reporting on games for Five Live instead.

Also, on their website promoting future seasons all details of his presence has been wiped from their presenting gallery and on their sports coverage page there is no mention of him either - just about Marc Vesty being your Derby County commentator rather than Marc deputising for Ross for a little while.

It would not surprise me at all if at the start of next season, Radio Five Live announce that they've added Ross Fletcher to their commentary team (with the likes of Nigel Adderley stepping up to a regular TV role to handle Football League highlights edits) - with maybe Colin Bloomfield joining Marc Vesty on the BBC Radio Derby commentary line-up, to deal with both the Rams and the Brewers.

That brings me on to: -

I didn't know they had done Burton commentaries online, but what you say makes sense as I know a number of BBC local radio stations (mostly those spanning fairly sparse footballing areas with big non-league teams in their catchment area) do this with their Conference teams.

Would Marc Vesty or Charles Collins have done the Brewers commentaries online, and was anyone ever a regular co-commentator?

I'd like to see Radio Derby starting to split the frequencies and start putting Burton Albion games on 1116 AM - although in saying that, here in the West Midlands, I have enjoyed listening to Derby games on that frequency which I can receive pretty clearly, so for many who enjoy listening to Rams games that way might not be best pleased if they did that.

I think the problem they face with Burton is this. They can't go from providing commentaries on Burton while they are in the Conference, to not providing them now they are in the football league, but they can't put the commentary on the website because they won't be allowed too, so they'll have to put in 1116 AM...I can't see another way really....until DAB arrives, that might provide some more options......although I'm doubtful as to whether the Derby DAB signal will cover the Burton area properly.

Some sad news to bring you.

It is reported today that Derek Lacey who has been the main match commentator on Carlisle United matches for BBC Radio Cumbria for the last decade has died at the age of 67 after taking ill earlier this week.

His last commentary was Carlisle v Millwall on 2 May when the Cumbrians retained their League 1 status.

R.I.P

I am sorry to read this. I have listened to a few of his commentaries and enjoyed them.

My thoughts are with his nearest and dearest.

Im sure theyll put Burton on AM and have Derby on FM - Ross might be back just after the start of the season or it could be longer. I think he'll still do stuff for 5live whether he's back at Radio Derby or not. The interesting thing will be the co commentator for the Derby games. I also think its better for someone else to do the Rams commentaries while Ross is away rather than him still doing them. Giving him a complete break and letting him do some 5live stuff which is where im sure he'll end up.

Thats sad to hear. Wasn't it him who once did a commentary in which he'd called a goal and hadn't realised it had been disallowed for quite a long time until after the commentary had finished? Or maybe it was a goal that he missed. Sure I remember reading or seeing that somewhere.

Yes I think he got the score wrong once. Sad news, I heard him last season, hadn't realise he'd become main commentator as I remember him in the summeriser role from 20 odd years ago.

RIP Derek

Sad news.

Given my geography, I've never had the chance to listen to Derek Lacey commentate but I was aware that he was such a local radio commentary legend, with him commentating on more than 500 Carlisle United games.

Although I never heard him commentate, I did enjoy this feature on him which was uploaded to the BBC website (which some of you might enjoy if you missed it the first time around).

RIP Derek.

Does anyone have any idea when the Premier League will announce the broadcast rights deals for the 2010-2011 season (and the next two seasons)?

I'm expecting it to be more or less the same with BBC Radio 5 Live taking the majority of packages with talkSPORT having one of them.

Commentary was on Five Live Sports Extra but I wasn't able to tune in and find out who was doing it. I assume it would have been Darren Fletcher & Ian Dennis with Waddle though.

Indeed they did, so it was Darren Fletcher (First Half and 90-105 Extra Time, England in Penalties) Ian Dennis (Second Half 105-120 and Sweden in Penalties on 5LSX (0-90) R5L (105-finish)

I particulary enjoyed it when the crowd went into an amazingly quick rendition of "In-ger-lund, In-ger-lund, In-ger-lund" when talkSPORT provided commentary on the penalty shoot out (rather than the clapping that actually took place)

Anyone know if any radio stations have got live coverage of any pre-season friendlies or friendly tournaments planned yet?

There has been talk on Hawksbee & Jacobs for a little while that talkSPORT will be covering this month's Wembley Cup, which involves Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic, Barcelona and Egypt's Al Ahly.

With it being a two day, group-stage only tournament but not played over a full round robin format (meaning no Spurs v Al Ahly or Celtic v Barcelona ties), I reckon talkSPORT will only do commentary on the two Spurs games.

These are Tottenham v Barcelona on Friday, July 24 (8pm kick-off) and Tottenham v Celtic on Sunday, July 26 (4pm kick-off).

Both games are the second match of a double header after Celtic v Al Ahly (can't see talkSPORT ditching Bowtime for that somehow) and Barcelona v Ahly respectively.

Now that the final of the UEFA Under-21 Championship brought to a close the 2008/09 season last night, we now have to wait a whopping two days for the start of the 09/10 season for British teams - with Motherwell v Llanelli among the UK clubs in Europa League qualifying action on Thursday night.

That is, unless you can't quite wait for that and count tomorrow's annual Breakfast v Drive game on the talkSPORT 5-a-side pitch as the start of the new season.

Wednesday 1st July: talkSPORT

The 4th annual talkSPORT 5-a-side game
Breakfast v Drive - Ian Danter (commentator), Paul Hawksbee & Andy Jacobs (summarisers/presenters), with Mike Parry (pitchside reporter/singer of the national anthem )

Commentary on the match, played on the talkSPORT 5-a-side pitch in Hatfields, London, came from the roof of talkSPORT Towers.

For those interested but didn't listen/haven't heard the result, Breakfast finally won this game at their fourth attempt.

The match was a 4-4 draw with the Breakfast winning 4-2 (I think) on penalties.

They'd given Breakfast what looked to be the stronger team this year, but Marc Bircham (the recently-retired former QPR & Canada midfielder), who is a mate of Andy Jacobs's and was only roped in at the last minute to replace Steve Lomas, hit all four of the Drive goals to give them a 4-1 lead early in the second half.

But a brace each from Don Hutchinson and Ray Parlour sent the game straight to penalties. Micky Quinn and Tony Cascarino (Cas's pen was a "YouTube moment") missed for Drive when facing Ronnie Irani, with Andy Goldstein scoring Breakfast's winning kick.

Drive goalkeeper Andrew McKenna (the sports newsreader) was given man of the match after saving a spot kick from Perry Groves in normal time. They say they are going to upload the highlights onto the talkSPORT website so keep an eye out for them.

Kick-off was at 2.15pm (two 20 minute halves with penalties directly after the full-time whistle), with an hour build-up and an hour reaction hosted by H&J taking the place of their normal show.

Really enjoyed the commentary by Dants (or was that Nigel Pearson? ) and the job Paul & Andy did in tying the coverage together.

It was just a bit of fun (before anyone moans about this being on a "serious" thread ) but it's a yearly one-off and I enjoyed it.

Who needs Roger Federer when you've got this?

And on the subject of Radio Scotland, I'm hoping that Setanta's demise will see the excellent Ken McRobb make a return this season.

You're more or less right. I'd say you should attempt to say the double 'L' as you would a 'th' sound.

(ie - like the snake in the animated Robin Hood story would say his own name as 'Sir Hith')
