Tupele Dorgu quits 'Coronation Street'

Coronation Street actress Tupele Dorgu has announced her decision to quit the ITV soap after five years.

The 31-year-old - who has played Underworld machinist Kelly Crabtree since September 2004 - has chosen not to renew her existing contract, which expires at the beginning of next year.

Her departure from the Weatherfield serial will see her character become embroiled in factory politics when she catches the eye of returning ladies' man Nick Tilsley (Ben Price).

Speaking of her decision to leave, Dorgu said: "I feel privileged to have been part of such an iconic show for five years and I am grateful to everyone at Coronation Street for the opportunities I have been given."

She added: "I have, however, decided to leave the show and am very excited about seeking new challenges and opportunities within the industry."

Dorgu is due to finish filming in January but will remain on screen until the end of March.

In 2007, she competed in ITV's singing competition Soapstar Superstar.
