Rikki Loney

If at first you don't succeed... Glaswegian Rikki Loney narrowly missed out on the Judges' Homes phase of The X Factor in a last-minute turnaround at Boot Camp in 2008, but he made it all the way to the live shows this time around. Sadly for the eyebrow-waggling crooner, his rendition of Aretha Franklin's take on Otis Redding's 'Respect' failed to win over the public and he lost out to Rachel Adedeji after performing Westlife's 'Flying Without Wings' in the sing-off. We got on the phone to ask Rikki how things were going a day after his exit from the show.

How are you feeling a day after being voted off?
"I'm just keeping my chin up. Obviously, I'm gutted, I didn't want it to end this quick, but unfortunately somebody needs to go every week and the public decided it was my turn. I just need to stay positive through this and just be grateful for the experience I've had."

Do you blame Cheryl's song choice for your elimination?
"Not in the slightest. It was a team decision. We discussed it together and I decided that a risk needed to be taken. I did take a risk and obviously it never paid off, but definitely it wasn't anything to do with Cheryl directly herself. There was definitely some discussion between the both of us."

Do you think your performance was good enough to keep you out of the bottom two?
"I thought from the song I had and the problems with the track being a bit difficult that I'd done it better than I'd ever done it in the rehearsals. On the Saturday night I thought that there were people who had worse comments. I did the best I could."

Did the negative feedback from Whitney Houston and Clive Davis knock your confidence?
"It did a wee bit, but I went out on that stage on Saturday night and I kind of bounced off it. I thought I'll definitely do this justice now. I thought I did do it justice for the track itself and for the version we were going for."

Looking back, do you think you made the right choice of 'Flying Without Wings' as your survival song?
"I probably would have chosen another track to be honest, but I picked that song and what will be will be. I don't tend to look back and think, 'Oh God I shouldn't have,' because you just don't get far with that."

What do you think about Cheryl saying that she couldn't believe John & Edward were still in the competition?
"I think she was just looking out for her boys. She was really protective over us and she just wants to see us do our best. I don't think she genuinely meant it directly at them. I think she was just a wee bit upset based on maybe the performance the night before."

Are you going to keep on trying for a career in music?
"Most definitely, I couldn't give up. This is obviously just a platform and I just want to build from this and hopefully good things will come from it."

Would you consider going on other TV reality contests?
"Obviously you never say never, and you don't know what's out there, but I'm definitely going to try and get out there and do it myself. I do write songs and things, so I'm going to try and see what's out there for me and I'm just going to work hard at it. It's less than 24 hours since the result and I just need to go away and think about things and discuss things with people, and hopefully good things will come out of this."

Who do you think is going to go on and win the show?
"I obviously want the boys to do really well, but I think Stacey could be a dark horse. I think she can go all the way to the final."

Were you closest to the boys in the X Factor house?
"I genuinely did get on with everybody, we all got on with everybody, no-one had qualms with anyone. I was quite close to Lloyd and Joe because we were in the same category together and we spent a lot of time together. I'm close to Danyl and also really friendly with Rachel and Miss Frank."

Was there any truth in reports of tension between Danyl and other contestants, specifically Kandy Rain?
"It's definitely just newspaper talk. It was taken out of context - that wasn't the case at all. The fact that he was accused of bullying isn't the case in the slightest, he definitely wasn't."

Do you think you'll be able to stay in touch with everyone?
"Most definitely yes. We all built a relationship from Boot Camp as really, really good friends and I think we'll always stay like that. Everybody thinks we're all fighting in the house, but it's nothing like that in the slightest - we all get on really, really well."

The X Factor continues this Saturday at 8pm on ITV1.
