How does it work exactly? If I join and find peeps to follow can they automatically see me? Or do they have to follow me to see my updates? And if you don't have any followers are you updating into the ether and talking to yourself? Confused of Glasgow!

They can see that you are following them, yes. They can read your updates unless you protect them, then they need to ask for permission from you.

It's amazing how quickly you will get followers. I only joined a a few days ago and I have 26.

This is a guess but if you look to the right you will see something like @ Replies. I'm guessing they will be in there.

Yeah, and if you're subscribed to their tweets, you'll see their @reply. So if you tweeted, and I responded to you, you'd see "@digitaldiablo: that comment rocks" or something like that.

I would recommend getting a seperate application rather than using the Twitter Website directly - I use Tweetdeck which has an excellent interface and 'tweets' when you have a new message.
