Spice Girls to open the London Olympics, possibly tour in 2012

So now we finally know what they have been hinting at for the past few months...

Quote:
Pop Svengali Simon Fuller – who turned the group into the most successful girl band ever – is behind a sensational move to reform them for the London games.

Simon, 49, said: “They stand for so much in British music history and I can’t think of a better time for them to get back together for another performance. The demand for them as a band is as strong as ever.”

The event will be seen by an estimated two billion people.
Quote:
Fuller also hinted that a tour around the time of the Olympics could mark a farewell from Victoria, Mel B, Geri, Mel C and Emma.

He said: “They will not want to be performing hits like Wannabe in their 40s, but it’s amazing how often people talk about another reunion. And I think if they do it, it’s going to be in 2012.”

What strikes me as true about this is not just the quote from Simon Fuller, but also the reality that China has taken the Opening Ceremony to levels that London cannot replicate, in terms of big dance/visual routines. The only direction London can go in is to give the world a big huge gig/party - drag in Queen, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Leona Lewis, Spice Girls. I can't see any other way.

Talk about embarrassing.
Bloke is utterly deluded.
Makes me ashamed to be British if this is the best we can share with the world on the day - a crap girl band.

Someone save us from old f*rt Elton and Sicko's Karaoke acts as well.

"They stand for so much in British Music"

That made me lol.

Well they do say that 2012 is going to be very lacking compared to Beijing. FFS this will be seen all over the world, what the hell is this going to say? For Gods sake 2 of them moved to LA so they are obviously very patriotic about Blightey, maybe Johnny Vegas could light the Torch?

They're a bit too old to be reforming for that. I can't see it happening myself.

I really really really hope you are right.
How embarrassing if they are the best that Britain can show the world.

So aged rock stars is the way forward??

THe SPICE GIRLS FFS????

Famous for just a few years and then been frankly lacklustre in their individual careers since.....

Theyre not ABBA or the Beatles!!

Can they not come up with someone/a group/band more recent? Talk about living in the past. Girl Power is long gone.

They were long past their best years ago, let alone another three years from now.

Leona Lewis? How dare you even mention her in the same sentence as Queen and a former beetle.

I'm already dreading our Olympic opening show, this just makes me want to hide under the bed. Maybe the Spice Bus will be driven out and dancers with brollies and bowler hats will.. oh hang on we already did that.

I agree, the last thing we want to do is try and do a 'Bejing' for cost and practical reasons. Britain will struggle getting 5 people on stage dancing in time never mind thousands of people like China had.

we also don't need the governments usual 'multicultural' attempts, where every artist/act has to include people from every ethnic and age group just to keep it politically correct.

our worldwide known acts that are still living I'd say are

Paul McCartney
Tom Jones
Coldplay
Led Zeppelin
The Spice Girls
Robbie Williams
Leona Lewis
Elton John
Queen (with new frontman needed)
David Bowie

to be honest I'm struggling to think of many more who are known worldwide and still able to perform.

Pretty dispiriting, we just had a celebration of 3000 years of Chinese history, our opening ceremony will be an edition of Top Of The Pops.

If its done well though it could work. Obviously it wouldn't just be that - they'll have other stuff. Sydney had Kylie and that worked really well.

Closing ceremony would be fine. It's always been a more laid back party atmosphere, but please god no, not the opening one, it would completely lower the tone of the whole event.
