Calvin Harris: 'Flashback'

On his debut album I Created Disco, Calvin Harris cashed in on the public's renewed love affair with '80s pop. With La Roux and Little Boots stealing his thunder in 2009, the skinny Scot has moved on to pastures new, mining the treasure trove of '90s dance music for his second disc Ready For The Weekend.

When Harris gets it right, as on lead single 'I'm Not Alone' or Dizzee collaboration 'Dance Wiv Me', he really knows how to craft a pop hit. Sadly, 'Flashback' isn't in the same ballpark, sounding like an offcut from a duff Ministry of Sound compilation. Sterile beats, a half-hearted chorus and Harris's weak vocal harmonies combine with fundamentally naff results. If you're looking for a reminder of the soulless "super clubs" of the turn of the decade, this will do the job nicely.
