Westlife: 'What About Now'

Westlife haven't got to where they are today - 14 No.1 hits, record sales in excess of 40 million, album number seven on its way - without being incredibly canny. A case in point is their new single. It's a cover of Daughtry's 'What About Now', a track that's never been a smash on this side of the Atlantic, but one that's increasingly familiar thanks to repeated use in Britain's Got Talent and X Factor montage scenes.

The Loife's take is no great reinvention, adding a lick of extra pop gloss to the manly balladry of the original. The strings swell like Louis Walsh's bank balance, the chorus is as big and stirring as Goliath's sugar spoon, and the boys deliver every line with their usual note-perfect earnestness. Cynical and predictable? Oh yes, but this is ruthlessly effective too.
