*When the US route system was being planned in 1925, AASHO used numbers ending in zero for the major east-west highways. However, they wanted to avoid using "US 0" for the northernmost east-west road, so they agreed to use "US 2" instead. In other words, US 2 occupies the corridor of the theoretical "US 0". (But no, that still doesn't justify the number for US 400!)
