Paraguay (river), also spelled Paraguai, river of central South America, originating in the highlands of the state of Mato Grosso, western Brazil. It flows 2,550 km (1,580 mi) south across central Paraguay to join the Paraná River at the northern border of Argentina. It is joined from the west by the Pilcomayo and Bermejo rivers. Although the river channel is subject to shifts, it is navigable for most of its course. Its chief port is Asunción, Paraguay.
