Map of Altiplano

Altiplano, high plateau region of the Andes Mountains, extending from southwestern Bolivia into southern Peru. It comprises a series of intermontane basins located at an altitude of about 3,600 to 4,000 m (12,000 to 13,000 ft) between the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Occidental, two ranges of the Andes. A relatively large number of people live in the Altiplano despite its cold, dry, and windy climate. Potatoes and barley are grown, and llamas are raised. Lake Titicaca and Lake Poopó are located in the Altiplano.
