Like most Arab countries, Jordan has a complicated history with the west thanks to colonialism. It managed to weather the odds, though, and go on to become one of the United States' more progressive allies in the region. Shortly after it was granted its independence in 1946, LIFE sent photographer John Phillips to the region to document the burgeoning country. Seen here: the Jordan River running through a valley.
