The reason we've required Update Rollup 4 for SP1 of Exchange Server 2007 is due to a number of Entourage specific work was done at that point.
Thanks for your post and interest!

As I noted to a previous poster, the Business Logic Layer and Exchange Web Services components that I referred to in my post were released with Exchange Server 2007. Therefore, the new release will not work with previous versions of Exchange Server simply because the technology does not exist.
The reason we've required Update Rollup 4 for SP1 of Exchange Server 2007 is due to a number of Entourage specific work was done at that point.
Thanks,
Mike

How to identify server version?
Mailbox server Microsoft Exchange version: 8.1.240.0
Does this correlate to MS Exchange 2007?
Is there a way to identify the Exchange server version from Entourage?

There is currently no way to verify the Exchange Server version via Entourage.

What happens on the wrong Rollup?
BTW, this sounds like a great step forward. WebDAV always had some weird quirks.
Thx

We absolutely must have SP1, and RU4 fixed a number of Exchange Web Services that are important for the Entourage for Exchange Web Services beta. Have a look at the following KB to learn more about these fixes: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957133/

Calendar
Another thing is, why not suport HTML in the description pane, just like Outlook 2007 does on Windows, at this moment only plain text is the way, and some times I'll put a hyperlink that is to big, and entourage will cut it to the other
Thanks for the access to the Beta and some cool features...

Thanks. Looking forward to trying this.
I rec'd my Beta acceptance this afternoon. Set up was even easier than before, and my Exchange data is currently downloading to Entourage.
Total agreement with acke on his comments.

Determining Exchange server version
Does this equate to a supported version for this new Entourage beta?
Is there any way to identify the server version through Entourage?

Help! Please.
I just spent 2 hours on the phone with my Exchange host to figure why my version of the Beta was not connecting and they still have no clue.
Based on this post, I think it has something to do with the Client Access server version and Mailbox server version... Among the things I get in OPTIONS > ABOUT in their Outlook Web Access are:
Outlook Web Access version: 8.1.336.0
Microsoft Exchange Client Access server version: 8.1.240.0
Mailbox server Microsoft Exchange version: 8.1.240.0
Am I right? The host in question (Rackspace) swears they are running Exchange 07 SP1 - RU5 but it doesn't seem to be uniformly installed. Is that possible? and how do I tell them to fix it?
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ADVISE. - Thx

Here are the version numbers for Exchange Servers that you can view via Outlook Web Access:
For Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, see the version ID for the Mailbox server Microsoft Exchange version.
The following list maps the Microsoft Exchange Server version to the Version ID.

Exchange 2007 SP1 RU4 v2 - 8.1.311.3
Exchange 2007 SP1 RU4 v1 - 8.1.311.1
Exchange 2007 SP1 RU3 - 8.1.291.2
Exchange 2007 SP1 RU2 - 8.1.278.2
Exchange 2007 SP1 RU1 - 8.1.263.1
Exchange 2007 SP1 - 8.1.240.6
Exchange 2007 RU7 - 8.0.813.0
Exchange 2007 RU6 - 8.0.783.2
Exchange 2007 RU5 - 8.0.754.0
Exchange 2007 RU4 - 8.0.744.0
Exchange 2007 RU3 - 8.0.730.1
Exchange 2007 RU2 - 8.0.711.2
Exchange 2007 RU1 - 8.0.708.3

Let me ask this another way...
You might be surprised at the slowness with which many corporate IT organizations update core services like Exchange.

Entourage for Exchange Web Services requires Exchange 2007 because the Business Logic Layer and Exchange Web Services didn't exist prior to Exchange 2007. SP1 and the rollups are required due to Entourage specific features and fixes that were implemented. We will connect to prior Update Rollups than RU4, but the supported version for the beta is RU4 due to the fixes I mentioned.
For customers still running Exchange 2003 or in a mixed environment, Entourage 2008 is the supported client. This is why we have the beta running through our Connect site, and why we have the survey in place so that we can screen for people who may not have the right environment.

Somehow my Beta is working via former Exch. host who's running Exchange 07 SP1, RU3
Any thoughts, Mike?

IMAP is a different protocol for connecting to Exchange or other types of mail servers. It is not using the Exchange Web Services technology. We've always supported POP3/IMAP with Entourage, but it is not taking full advantage of Exchange like syncing your task, notes, etc. among other things.

Identity database
Is there any chance that the new Entourage will breakup the monolithic database (~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Main 2008 Identity/Database) much as Apple did for the once monolithic mbox files for Apple Mail? This will especially help all of us who use Time Machine or otherwise do incremental backups? Every time one just reads an email or some such, the backup must backup the entire database - mine is currently 8.4 GB. Between the amount of email and especially attached documents included, this file continues to grow.
Any thought to this? This, to me, is almost as important as 'upgrading' away from WebDAV.

Filtering
For example, whether searching amongst the originator or the recipient(s) of an email, I can not filter on a component of an email address (a person's user name or an element of their domain name). I can only seem to use the human readable part of the name.
These would support probably 95% of the cases of search for me.
Another useful change would be to, within the matching messages, highlight, at least, the first but preferably all 'words' matching the search word (whether it is in the message's subject, from, to, body, etc.).
Thanks for this venue of communication.

The link to apply to be in the beta is at the very bottom of the page, just look for where it says "click here to apply".
