It has been a busy weekend, not only for me, but also for my mailbox.
I've gotten tons of feedback from viewers, about the Left4DotA (8/10/09) blog, because I have given the impression, that I'm against Icefrog teaming up with Valve.
So let's get real for a second:
I think Icefrog teaming up with a successful gaming company is a giant step for DotA, but I still have to ask myself whether this is what DotA needs or not.
First off, Valve's successes are Half-life 1 and 2, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and Day of Defeat. First Person shooters in a present or futuristic environment, always resolving around guns and grenades. These are not features present in DotA. So what can Valve give DotA that Icefrog couldn't? Hopefully only Financial support for Icefrog, and a good team of game-testers, so he can continue to be in control, and move DotA in the direction he had in mind all along.
But is that likely? Let's see it from Valve's perspective: They're chipping in on a game owned by Blizzard, and all copies bought to play DotA (Warcraft 3 if anyone forgot) is going down Blizzard's pocket, so all Valve gets is their name on the game...
...And Icefrog's soul. I could easily imagine that they would demand Icefrog to add or remove certain features, thus forcing Icefrog to compromise with his own ideas. Moving the mountain by carrying away small stones. Perhaps not a bomb objective though.
I may be completely on the wrong track, but believe me; A multimillion company has a plan when they start giving away money and staff to support a project owned by a rival company. If only Yoda could guide us in this era of change.

I guess that Icefrog wants a stand alone game like HoN or LoL. All units are of course the property of blizzard but the ideas, spells etc. are from Icefrog, Guinsoo, Pendragon etc. So Icefrog basically just needs a new engine with imba graphics by Valve and he needs to tell the people how this game should look like, what there is in need to be done etc. etc. to make this stand alone look similar to real DotA. I guess that Spell- and Itemdatas will be implemented there 1by1. Rest will just look new and you will have to adapt to it.

In my opinion this is what Icefrog wants to do.

haha love the comic per usual. i love the left4dota blog. i nearly made a featured blog news about it to be honest but didnt have the time to as you can see, been spamming news lately haha.. so.. once again amazing job and keep it up

Lol? Icefrog said several times that this depends on the Sc2 editor. But now he is working with Valve, so who gives a shit about DotA in Sc2 :D
