BBC Switch to launch "YouTube X Factor"

BBC Switch is to launch a talent hunt billed as a “YouTube X Factor”, made by Hat Trick Productions.

The 10 x 5-minute Chartjackers challenges four young music fans to scout and assemble a successful pop group in a limited amount of time. The series will air on BBC2 starting this month and will be repeated as a 30-minute compilation just before Christmas.

Four contenders, aged 18-22, that are well-known on YouTube are given 10 weeks to get a number one single using just the online community.

They will form a band and coverage will feature on YouTube as well as the BBC website.

The series was ordered by BBC multiplatform commissioning executive Jo Twist and head of Switch Geoff Goodwin. The strand is also revamping its online portal with effect from next week.
