Make your own maps
The Mapper allows you to make your own maps containing commercial fishing information (catch or GVP, 2000 - 2002) and socio-economic indicators in adjacent coastal communities.
Using the Mapper
Steps:
- Select and set what you wish to map using the right hand pane, then click Update Map to display the results.
- Navigate using the tools across the top. You can also get more information about catches inside a half-degree cell by using the query tool.
- Save your map as a PDF using the Export to PDF tool.

Parts of the Mapper
Down the right side are the data selection controls:
- Fisheries: tick the checkbox to map Commercial Fisheries and select [catch] or [GVP] for mapping.
- Method: select a fishing method (or all methods) for mapping.
- Year: select a year for mapping.
- Species: select a species (or all species) for mapping, or
- Family: select a family (or all species) for mapping.
- Class Breaks: a set of class intervals are chosen automatically to represent the fishing data. These may be overridden manually here.
- Statistical Local Areas: tick the checkbox to map coastal Statistical Local Areas and then select one of the socio-economic indicator themes.
- Urban Centres/Localities: tick the checkbox to map coastal towns and localities and then select one of the socio-economic indicators themes.
- Graticule: tick the checkbox to view latitude and longitude markings.
- 200m Depth Contour: tick the checkbox to display the 200m depth contour.
Across the top are the navigation and mapping controls, from left these are:
- Map Size: set the size of the map image.
- Zoom to Region: pick a Marine Region to zoom in to.
- Navigate:
- Zoom in
- Zoom out
- Pan around
- Zoom to full extent
- Query a Cell : Click on a cell and find out about all the catch within that cell.
- Update Map: Click this to update the map after changing any settings.
- Export to PDF: Click this to generate a PDF map for printing or saving.
Don't forget to use the button to refresh the map when you change settings.
