Mr BRIAN SHEAD

Mr Brian Shead has devoted the greater part of his life to motor sport in a number of capacities. As a driver, he won the 1979 Australian Formula Two Championship – but he is better known as a car constructor and engineer. The name “Cheetah” has been a vital element in Australian open wheeler racing for two decades, racking up numerous race wins and championship titles. Remarkably, every Cheetah car was designed and built almost single-handedly by Brian in a small workshop at the back of his house. In 1988, Brian played a leading role in the introduction of Formula Holden and has devoted much of his time since, ensuring the Formula has every chance of success. Since 1981, Brian has made a substantial contribution to the sport through his work on the National Track Safety Committee. This has involved many hours of voluntary work, in a demanding role, one which has helped make the sport considerably safer for everyone. His sportsmanship, his selflessness and his engineering ability have combined to earn Brian Shead the respect of his peers and the motor racing community in general that he was made a life member of CAMS in 1994.
