Wynnum suburb profile

If you want to live near the water and be close enough for a commute to the city, Wynnum might be your answer.

Location

About 15km and 30 minutes by car from Brisbane's CBD, Wynnum - like the nearby suburb of Lota - is one of Brisbane's rediscovered suburbs attracting those who wish to live near the water.

Bayside suburbs all have common elements - they are all comparatively close to Brisbane’s CBD and have beach and waterside lifestyle advantages. Generally consisting of older suburbs, the bayside has represented renovation opportunities for canny investors.

Renovator’s dream

Traditionally, Wynnum consisted predominately of Queenslanders and worker’s cottages, desired by investors for their renovation potential. However, there is now a greater selection of architecture after homeowners drew on the increased equity in their property to make improvements.

“Wynnum/Manly has completely changed from a quiet seaside village to a trendy locale with shops and cafes,” REIQ managing director Dan Molloy said.

“The marina, mangrove boardwalk and wading pool ensure local residents and day visitors can make the best of the seaside lifestyle.

“The suburbs of Wynnum and Manly were some of the first Brisbane areas to grow as a result of the sea-change phenomenon and, as such, they are beginning to display the characteristics of other post-boom suburbs.”

The area has a yacht club in nearby Manly and this attracts a lot of interest from people all over the region with the area also located on the Cleveland train line.

There is a wide cross-section of couples and families attracted by the extensive redevelopment around the waterfront precinct and the inspired street-scaping around the Wynnum and Manly areas.

With very little land left in close proximity to the waterfront, homebuyers wanting the bayside lifestyle are renovating older homes and cottages.

Shopping

The Wynnum/Manly area is well serviced by commercial and retail precincts, which continue to thrive as the area gains in popularity.

Wynnum has access to all the major supermarket and retail chains; there is also Manly Harbour Shopping Village and street shopping available. There are approximately four or five local villages as well with nurseries also plentiful in the area.

Capalaba and Carindale shopping centres are in neighbouring suburbs 10-15 minutes away.

Leisure

There are also plenty of bike and walk ways, a community swimming pool and a seawater wading pool available to residents. In the summer there are many outdoor activities such as canoeing, rollerblading, and biking.

Schools and hospital

The Wynnum Hospital is located in Whites Road. There are a number of public and private schools (about six primary, two secondary, and six kindergartens). The closest TAFE is at Alexandra Hills about 10 minutes away.
