Burton admitted knowing his opponent had not been helpful

Euan Burton took gold in an all-British final of the -81kg category at the Judo World Cup event in Birmingham. Burton beat Tom Reed with a winning ippon throw midway through the five-minute bout after both men had received penalty scores against them. Burton's Edinburgh clubmate Sarah Adlington also struck gold, beating Italy's Lucia Tangorre with a pindown. And in the -78kg class Sian Wilson completed the British team's medal haul, beating Maike Heinz foe bronze. But three other British fighters missed out on medals. Commonwealth Games champion Samantha Lowe was disqualified from her semi-final for an attempted illegal throw. Peter Cousins lost the half-heavyweight bronze match to Frederic Stiegelman of France, and Chris Sherington was beaten in the heavyweight +100kg division by Sergey Prokin. Burton admitted it had been strange fighting a fellow Briton, and had not made for the greatest spectacle. "It was always going to be a bit cagey when you are fighting against another British player, because we know each other so well," he said. "Tom has been in fantastic form and there is also a lot at stake, because it is the pride of your country - you always want to stay number one."
