Taylor wins young cricketer award

Taylor scored three centuries for Leicestershire this season

Leicestershire batsman James Taylor has been voted the country's best young cricketer, ahead of Stuart Broad.

The 19-year-old was named the Cricket Writers' Club Young Cricketer of the Year - polling twice as many votes as Broad in second place.

England under-19 international Taylor enjoyed a prolific season with the bat, scoring 1,177 first class runs in 16 matches at an average of 58.85.

That haul included three hundreds and six half-centuries.

The award, which is in its 60th year, is given to players under the age of 23 on 1 May of that year.

Former winners include Fred Trueman, Sir Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff.

Taylor has previously represented Shropshire at Minor Counties level and played for Shrewsbury in the Birmingham League.

He told BBC Radio Leicestershire: "It's great to cap off the season like that and it's nice when you see who's won it previously.

"It's going to be hard to get anywhere near what they have done."
