Funny man and "Late Show" host David Letterman has admitted to being the target of an extortion attempt.

During a taping of Thursday's show, the 62-year-old admitted that he had sexual relationships with female employees and that someone tried to extort him over the affairs.

Letterman said that person threatened to reveal the relationships unless he paid $2 million.

In a release, Letterman said, "My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people, I need to certainly protect my family."

Letterman said he referred the matter to the Manhattan district attorney's office and that an investigation ended in an arrest Thursday.

As part of the investigation process, Letterman said he wrote a fake $2 million check to the individual involved and also testified before a grand jury.

The DA's office has declined to comment.
