The Metropolitan Opera's outdoor HD film festival almost feels like a rock concert in the middle of Lincoln Center. NY1's George Whipple filed the following report.

New York's Metropolitan Opera has created a film festival right in its home in the center of Lincoln Center. A giant movie screen is mounted on the front of the Metropolitan Opera to show high-definition videos of the Metropolitan Opera's greatest hits.

The plaza of Lincoln Center is filled with chairs for viewers who pay absolutely nothing for the privilege of seeing the show.

Peter Gelb, the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, says the outdoor festival is his baby.

"This is a very difficult economic time as we all know, and what we want to do is not be is be stymied in our efforts to bring opera to the people by the economy," says Gelb. "We know that we need to take the long view. And the long view for this opera house is to embrace and encourage the public. That's why we're doing this and that's why we're staying on the artistic course that we've set which is to keep opera fresh and accessible."

The gentle weather Wednesday night brought out a full crowd to see "The Barber of Seville."

The festival includes great operas like "La Boheme" and closes on Labor Day, September 7, with a screening of "Madame Butterfly."

Gelb is looking for new audiences -- that may include you.

"Anyone who is interested in contemporary theater, who likes Broadway, who likes to see intelligent movies, those are the audience members who we think we can turn on to opera," says Gelb.

Unlike the regular operas at the Metropolitan Opera House, outdoor viewers can bring their dogs to howl along.

So come on down to the Metropolitan Opera while it's free, while it's outdoors and while it's fun.
