Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart have been paired together in a new movie that is being billed as romantic drama, called "Love Happens."

Eckhart plays Burke Ryan, a successful motivational speaker. His best-selling book is about dealing with the loss of a loved one and getting over grief. Burke's agent has big plans for the author on the horizon.

Burke's secret is that he isn't really over his wife's death and even though he's doling out advice to others, he's desperately in need of help himself.

Enter Jennifer Aniston, who plays Eloise, the owner of a flower shop who Burke meets one day and asks out on a date. In fact, it's the first date that he's been on since his wife died three years earlier.

An awkward courtship begins, as Eloise, who distrusts men after many bad relationships, decides to let her guard down. Meanwhile, Ryan struggles with his inner demons.

What director and co-writer Branson Camp has done here is make one of the most unwatchable films I've seen all year. The lead character's wife may have died in a car crash, but watching "Love Happens" is like witnessing a train wreck.

Nothing of interest happens here at all. The romance doesn't work. It's not convincing on any level and one can't even see why these two people, who seem to have nothing in common, spend any time together.

Eckhart's character is supposed to be an emotional mess, but as written, he's not endearing, or even remotely interesting. Aniston's character suffers from the same problems. The tone of the movie is depressing, the soundtrack is overly dreary and the movie doesn't click at all.

Aniston can be very appealing if she's cast in the right role, but her career choices since the TV show "Friends" haven't been too good. This one ranks among the worst.

Eckhart, who's proven to be a terrific actor in the past, can't do anything to elevate the sappy, syrupy material. I couldn't wait for it to be over, since it's pointless and just plain deadly.

Neil Rosen's Big Apple Rating: 0.5 Wormy Apple
