A wake was held Friday for a woman who was killed in a drunk driving crash involving an off duty police officer in Brooklyn.

Vionique Valnord, 33, was struck on Avenue N in Flatlands early Sunday while she was trying to hail a cab after a wedding.

Off-duty Police Officer Andrew Kelly, 30, is facing vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving charges.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was among those who paid their respects to Valnord.

"It's too hard I can't take it. I can't take seeing my baby in that casket. It's hard for me to take," said one mourner. "When I first heard it I passed out. And to see my baby in that casket hurts my heart. I can't take it."

"She was a beautiful young woman and she was a good friend with a a golden heart," said another.

During a court appearance earlier Friday, Kelly's attorney submitted an apology letter from the officer. The attorney then asked the prosecutors to turn it over to Valnord's family, if they found it appropriate.

"He's devastated, Andrew has two daughters, two and six years old, and he knows this family has lost their daughter and he knows their pain must be unimaginable," said Arthur Aidala, the officer's attorney.

"This letter does not give me my daughter back. I don't need it," said Philoisa Valnord, the victim's mother. "He belongs in jail."

"I don't think there is much he could say that would make me forget my daughter, because she's dead. And she is my only daughter," said Varius Valnord, the victim's father. "I loved her so much. I remember her everyday. I hope we get justice."

Internal Affairs investigators are looking for evidence of a coverup, as it took seven hours to administer a blood test. The test revealed a blood alcohol content of zero.

Sources say Kelly admitted that he had been drinking, and that investigators have obtained a video of him drinking at a bar before getting into his car.

Citing police sources, the New York Post reported an officer who gave gum and water to Kelly at the scene has been suspended. The paper also reported a sergeant who delayed getting Kelly to the hospital for the blood test has been reassigned.

Kelly is due back in court on December 3, but may be asked to testify before a grand jury as early as next week.
