Basics
You're in control of Sonic, the fastest hedgehog ever to wear a pair of cross trainers. Sonic's trademark is his super speed -- if he's got room to run and roll, look out! Guide Sonic through six stages of three acts each, battling Dr. Robotnik himself at the end of the third act. Search for the legendary Chaos Emeralds while you're at it!
Controls
Control Sonic with the direction keys, using the jump button to reach higher areas and to attack enemies. Sonic, covered with spines, can put some major hurt on when he's doing an aerial somersault. The robotic enemies will break apart and release the animal inside if Sonic is spinning when he hits them. While Sonic is moving, press down to roll into a ball; enemies can be hurt in this manner as well.
Rings
Golden rings litter each stage you visit. Grab as many as you can! If you manage to collect 100 rings, you score an extra life. Here's the trick: if Sonic gets injured by an enemy, he drops all his rings. If he gets hit when he's not carrying any, he's dead. Keep at least one ring with you at all times to be safe!
Powerups
Other pickups are available to help out. You'll see them inside TV sets scattered throughout each level. Energy shields, temporary invulnerability, more rings and sneakers that can make Sonic go even faster are all waiting to be picked up. Spin onto a TV to break it open.
Tip: Checkpoints
Star Lamps are scattered throughout each act. Touch them whenever you can -- if you die, you start back at the nearest Star Lamp you touched.
Tip: Bonus Stages
If you have 50 rings or more at the end of an act, a giant ring appears. Jump through it to be teleported to a spinning maze containing a Chaos Emerald. The Emeralds are hard to get, but you won't get the best ending without them.
Tip: Chaos Emeralds
The goal in each Spinning Maze is to reach the end and claim the Chaos Emerald. Touch the colored squares around the Emerald to disintegrate them, and touch the UP and DOWN blocks to change the maze's speed of rotation. Don't touch the GOAL barriers -- these mislabeled blocks will take you out of the bonus stage.
Tip: Like a Blue Buzzsaw
As a general rule, it's better to be spinning. If you're running down a steep incline or vertical shaft, push down to make Sonic spin. A spinning Sonic is more dangerous to enemies and a lot less vulnerable.
Tip: Breath
Sonic's can't hold his breath underwater forever. Watch for air bubbles as you swim along. He can get a fresh breath of air from the big ones. They grow out of little bubble clusters on the ground.
Tip: Dropped!
If you get hit and drop your rings, try to re-collect as many as you can before they bounce away. As long as you've got some rings, Sonic is safe from enemies.
