Being audited by the state is bad enough, but NY1 For You helped one New Yorker who said she waited four months for a tax refund. NY1's Susan Jhun filed a NY1 For You follow-up report.

Kenya Mondesire, a city resident, had hoped to get an early state tax refund, but instead underwent a state audit.

"I received a letter stating that I was being audited and I needed to provide a list of documents," she said.

Mondesire did immediately, and three weeks later she was told there would be a 90-day waiting period.

"The 90 days had passed. I called and I was told, 'Well, we've changed the waiting period. It's now not 90 days, it's 120 days," said Mondesire. "Which was frustrating, because you're given a deadline and you wait three months for something and then it's, 'Oh, well, we need a little more time so wait another month.'"

At the end of the fourth month, Mondesire still had not received a response.

"I was told that I could put in a referral to have someone contact the audit department specifically and say, 'Listen, this person has waited over the 120 days. We need a response from you so we can let this woman know what's going on.' But that process is another 30 days," said Mondesire.

When NY1 met with Mondesire two weeks ago, she said she was looking to get a straight answer.

NY1 called The State Department of Taxation and Finance and a spokeswoman said changes to their computer system created a delay in the auditing process for some taxpayers. The agency contacted Mondesire immediately after NY1's call and apologized for the delay.

After Mondesire submitted some additional documents, she was notified that her review was completed and she would receive her refund check within a week.

It was a relief to the mother of two, who said her overdue refund will come just in time to pay school tuition.
