'Wild Things' Banners, 'The Ring 3D,' Megan Fox Slams Continue and More

Photo: Warner Bros. Warner Bros. sent over four new character posters for Where the Wild Things Are. You can check out the small versions above or click here to view the larger versions in the gallery. I'm sure most of you read the comments Megan Fox made about her Transformers director, Michael Bay, comparing him to Hitler. Well, some of Bay's crew members sent in a letter to the director's official site, which was reprinted, leading me to believe he has given the comments a thumbs up. Here's a snippet: We've had the tedious experience of working with the dumb-as-a-rock Megan Fox on both Transformers movies," the letter says early on. [Note: the grammar ansd phraseology are weak so I've cleaned up certain portions.] "We [work] in different departments, and can't give our names because sadly doing so in Hollywood could lead to being banished from future Paramount work. One of us touches Megan's panties, another has the often sh*tty job of pulling Ms. »

We've Got to Give 'Hancock 2' a Shot... Right?

Word has it that not only will we see Will Smith back in the title role of Hancock 2, but Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman are also set to return for the sequel to the critically panned 2008 box-office success Hancock. There remain scant plot details with Variety saying Smith and Theron will once again play immortal gods, who lose their powers when in each other's presence. The two must pair up to deal with a third entity. The actioner is expected to explore the 3,000-year-old world they're from, which was only hinted at in the first film. Recently Berg told Sci-Fi Wire the film may incorporate another god and added more telling MTV, "We're looking at exploring [Smith and Theron's] relationship prior to when we first met them and seeing a bit of what happened as a prequel. I think we danced around the concept of an origins and we settled on something that is very substantive. »

Domestic Trailer for von Trier's 'Antichrist'

11 September 2009 2:57 PM, PDT

Well, the proposed Australian poster caused quite a stir when I posted it earlier this week and so I can't help but wonder if the conversation will spill over to this post as the domestic trailer for Lars von Trier's controversial upcoming feature Antichrist has debuted at Apple prior to its October 23 release by IFC Films. The film is being classified as a foreign horror, but I wonder if those that have seen it would agree as it appears to be much more than that. Starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the film centers on a grieving couple who retreat to 'Eden', their isolated cabin in the woods, where they hope to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse. Check out the trailer directly below or at Apple in high definition. I also have 18 stills from the »

Official Title for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' Announced

11 September 2009 2:43 PM, PDT

Photo: Walt Disney Pictures The official title for the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been announced and it is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, to which Devin Faraci at Chud has pointed out bares resemblance to Tim Powers' "On Stranger Tides". The description of the book from a Publishers Weekly review at Amazon.com reads as follows: World Fantasy Award-winner Powers (Three Days to Never) demonstrates a precise control of complex narratives in this reprint of his rollicking and enchanting 1987 novel. Puppeteer John Chandagnac, bound for Jamaica to recover stolen money from his uncle, becomes Jack Shandy after pirates attack his ship and force him to join their crew. Shandy's struggle to accept his new life grounds the story for readers, even as Blackbeard and vodun magicians whisk everyone away to dreamlike lands where the Fountain of Youth itself awaits. The chaotic sea battles sing, »

Finally a Trailer for 'Solomon Kane'

11 September 2009 12:59 PM, PDT

A day or so ago I added the Russian-language version of the Solomon Kane trailer, but didn't promote it because I assumed the number of readers around this space that understand Russian are probably limited. However, today the English-language version has arrived and considering I had quite a bit of fun with the footage screened for this little actioner at Comic Con I felt it was one worth pubbing even though it doesn't have an official release date and I fear it will only end up on DVD and Blu-ray here in the States. The film is an adaptation of the pulp novels of Robert E. Howard, author of "Conan the Barbarian," first serialized in the 1920s and '30s, Solomon Kane is planned as the first in a trilogy. The film is an epic tale of a 16th century soldier tormented by his past evil deeds, seeking redemption by »

Movie Review: Whiteout (2009)

11 September 2009 12:38 AM, PDT

Kate Beckinsale's face remains unaffected by the blistering cold in Whiteout

Photo: Warner Bros. You ever hear of this place called Antarctica? Of course you have, it's the place with all the cute little penguins from that documentary you saw four years ago. However, did you know it is the coldest, most isolated landmass on the planet? Okay, you probably knew that too, just not in such threatening terms. But you better get ready, because the blistering cold and lonely continent is about to bore you stiff in a film that isn't as much awful as it is just plain dumb. Whiteout has been delayed for as long as I can remember after first seeing footage from it back at the 2007 Comic Con, again at Comic Con 2008 and it finally arrives in theaters in 2009. Typically when a film is delayed this long it's for a reason and Whiteout doesn't »

The Dude is Up for the Duke's Role in Coens' 'True Grit'

10 September 2009 10:23 PM, PDT

Jeff Bridges is known for many roles, but perhaps none are more iconic than his role as Jeffrey "the Dude" Lebowski in the 1998 film The Big Lebowski. So when you hear the Dude may play a role originated by the Duke it just somehow seems like bigger news than it may actually be. That's the word, though, from Michael Fleming at Variety as Jeff Bridges is said to be in discussions with Paramount to star in Joel and Ethan Coen's redo of True Grit, a film that starred John Wayne as a one-eyed, broken-down marshal in this 1969 adaptation of Charles Portis's bestselling novel. The Coen feature is said to have been redrafted by the brothers to be more faithful to the Portis novel. The story centers on a 14-year-old girl who tags along with an aging U.S. marshal, Rooster Cogburn, and another lawman to track the outlaw who killed her father. »

Box-Office Oracle: Sep. 11 - Sep. 13, 2009

10 September 2009 3:51 PM, PDT

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row 1. Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself I refuse to underrate Tyler Perry's box office pull. I'm putting this one in-between Madea Goes to Jail and Why Did I Get Married in terms of per theater average. If you have a better idea that doesn't involve casting runes I'm all ears. Estimate: $33.8 million 2. Sorority Row The R rating won't help. But it only needs to clear $6,700 per theater to hit this number. That's only like 50 tickets per show. Surely it can do that, right? Estimate: $17.9 million 3. Whiteout It doesn't look good for Whiteout. It's another one of these "delayed for a reason" style of films. Estimate: $12.4 million 4. 9 Don't blame me, it's not getting enough theaters. It cleared $3m on Wednesday which would indicate the demand would be higher this weekend. But I think those were the animation junkies starved for product. »

'Up In the Air' Lands in Theaters This November

10 September 2009 12:19 PM, PDT

It was previously thought Jason Reitman's Up In the Air would arrive in theaters on December 4, but today I received confirmation from Paramount Pictures the Telluride Festival hit will land in theaters on November 13 in limited release and expand its reach on November 25, 2009. I have been holding off on doing a fresh Oscar update following the many great reviews for the film out of Telluride and waiting for the second round after the film's September 12 screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. Hopefully this Monday we will have a clearer picture as to whether the early buzz is enjoying a little too much hype or if this one is a bona fide gem. Paramount Pictures also revealed The Lovely Bones release platform saying it will hit theaters on December 11, 2009 in limited release with an expansion on December 25, 2009 and a wide release on January 15, 2010. The trailer for Up In the Air was just released yesterday, »

What are the 25 Best Book to Film Adaptations?

10 September 2009 4:46 AM, PDT

The Telegraph has posted a nice little list of what they consider to be the 25 best book to film adaptations and while most of the titles will likely not surprise you, perhaps the order in which they are placed will. Considering this is the Internet, the most discussed placement is sure to be The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 25th spot while the Harry Potter filmed franchise comes in three spots earlier at 22. Unfortunately, I haven't read many of the books from this list, but I have seen all but a few of the films. I will say I am far more partial to Stephen King's "The Shining" than I was to Kubrick's adaptation and I hardly remember the Harry Potter books well enough to even say if I think they are great adaptations as much as I have simply enjoyed both the films and the books. »

Bryce Dallas Howard Oscar Potential? Indie Distributor Picks Up 'Teardrop'

9 September 2009 1:46 PM, PDT

Bryce Dallas Howard in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond

Photo: Paladin I just received a press release from the new independent film company Paladin, announcing they have picked up and will release The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Evans, Ellen Burstyn, Oscar nominee Ann-Margret, Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer and Will Patton. The drama is based on a heretofore unproduced original screenplay by legendary writer Tennessee Williams and directed by Jodie Markell, in her feature debut. In one of the few reviews of the film coming out of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, Joe Leydon at Variety offered up mixed feelings with the following intro: The fragrant aroma of magnolias is undercut by the distinct smell of mothballs throughout "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond," an admirably earnest but curiously flat attempt to film a long-unproduced scenario by Tennessee Williams. Although Williams penned »

Weinstein's Move 'The Road' to November 25

9 September 2009 11:32 AM, PDT

The first question that came to mind once I was told Dimension Films had decided to move John Hillcoat's The Road -- starring Viggo Mortensen and adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning Cormac McCarthy novel -- from its October 16 release date to November 25 is What about Nine? Nine, the musical adaptation of the stage play directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago) was already slated for November 25, is a Weinstein feature and is also a heavy Oscar favorite. Of course, Nine is most likely looking at a puny New York and Los Angeles release in November followed by expanding dates in December, which pretty much alleviates any real kind of competition and proves my query moot. So, as it stands, the move now pits The Road up against The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Ninja Assassin and Old Dogs with Disney's The Princess and the Frog also getting a limited release with plans to »

'Up In the Air' Teaser Trailer

9 September 2009 10:37 AM, PDT

The teaser trailer for Jason Reitman's already much talked about Up In the Air has arrived following its debut at the Telluride Film Festival and the havoc it caused in my Oscar predictions as yesterday I updated my charts for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director based on the buzz surrounding this film. Up In the Air stars George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick with Clooney playing Ryan Bingham, a corporate hatchet man who loves his life on the road but is forced to fight for his job when his company downsizes its travel budget. He is required to spend more time at home just as he is on the cusp of a goal he's worked toward for years: reaching five million frequent flyer miles and just after he's met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams. Check out the trailer below and look out as the »

Snip, Snip Goes the Potential 'Antichrist' Poster

9 September 2009 2:38 AM, PDT

Glenn Dunks over at Stale Popcorn alerts us to a potential poster design for Lars von Trier's Antichrist created by Jeremy Saunders of which the designer Twittered about recently saying, "Praying (to whatever) that [Lars von Trier] approves my poster for the Australian release of Antichrist before I go on holiday on Tuesday." Well, there's no word on whether or not the poster was approved for the Australian release, but Saunders has previewed his design at his official site and having not seen the film and only heard about its brutality I can only say I'm intrigued, but Glenn at Stale Popcorn says, "As somebody who has actually seen the film in question, I can say that the poster is... somewhat apt. I do like to imagine this hanging up in the local arthouses and having some unsuspecting victims moviegoers mulling to themselves or their friends 'well that's looks intriguing!'" Check »

Movie Review: 9 (2009)

9 September 2009 12:26 AM, PDT

9 (voiced by Elijah Wood), 7 (voiced by Jennifer Connelly) and 5 (voiced by John C. Reilly) in 9

Photo: Focus Features Writer/director Shane Acker has updated and extended his 2005 Oscar-nominated animated short film and brought it to the big screen with the producing help of Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and Tim Burton (Ed Wood). While the film isn't perfect, it serves as the sign of an up-and-coming director to keep our eyes on, as he isn't setting out to tell a goofy story filled with pop-culture jokes and a series of caricatures as much as Acker seems intent on entertaining a more mature audience with higher expectations from their visits to the cinema. It's these expectations that cause 9 to be both a triumph and a minor misstep, but it's nonetheless encouraging for the future of the medium. 9 takes place in post-apocalyptic Earth where humans have been obliterated by machines run amuck and all »

New Trailer for Disney's 'Princess and the Frog'

9 September 2009 12:13 AM, PDT

Yahoo has debuted a brand new trailer for Disney's upcoming 2-D animated holiday feature The Princess and the Frog, which has a lot riding on its shoulders as computer generated animation is storming the box-office with 3-D features. Is there any room left for 2-D? I certainly hope so, but it is up to audiences to head to the theaters and support such films if they want to see more. Hitting cinemas on November 25 before expanding wide on December 11, The Princess and the Frog takes a modern twist on a classic tale, featuring a beautiful girl named Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss that leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana. Blu-Ray Capsule Review: 'Earth'

9 September 2009 12:12 AM, PDT

Earth Quick Thoughts: I didn't see this one in theaters, but that was primarily due to the reason that all they really did with this was take BBC's excellent "Planet Earth" series, chop it down from nearly nine hours of footage to 90 minutes and replace David Attenborough's narration with James Earl Jones. Now don't get me wrong, this is excellent stuff, but since I had already seen it in the epic scale of the "Planet Earth" series I wasn't entirely moved to see it in theaters. Had it been filmed in IMAX I probably would have made an exception. As for this Blu-ray release, it still doesn't make me wish I saw it in theaters, but it does have me itching to buy "Planet Earth" on Blu-ray as opposed to the mere DVD set I currently own (and reviewed right here). This is just immaculate footage and this 90-minute »
