We went because: We visited Thailand three years ago and enjoyed Southeast Asia. We wanted to see more of Asia and dispel any preconceptions about Vietnam.

Don't miss: The tropical island of Phu Quoc (before it is overrun with development), and the cool mountain town of Da Lat. Enjoy the "Easy Riders" while there.

Don't bother: With the "party boats" of Nha Trang. The snorkeling is poor and the boats are packed. Pay more and go on the "dive trips."

Coolest souvenir: The embroidered artwork, from framed pictures to clothing. Top of the line is from the "XQ" art studios.

Worth a splurge: Spend more time and visit more places while in Vietnam. Cover the country from south to north with a minimum of six to eight weeks.

We wish we'd packed: Several travel packs of flushable moist wipes, as napkins and toilet paper are at a premium throughout Vietnam.

Other comments: Vietnam is a very friendly and safe country for Americans to visit. It is extremely affordable; the cuisine is fair and the scenery gorgeous.
