Fairmont penthouse gets fancy facelift

At a time when the national unemployment rate flirts with 10 percent and consumer spending is downright anemic, the Fairmont San Francisco is planning to raise the nightly rate of its penthouse to $15,000 from $12,500. The rates will apparently take effect after a $1.8 million renovation.

While it's hard to wrap one's brain around the idea of a 20 percent rate hike in the middle of a devastating economic downturn, but a spokesperson for the hotel told the San Francisco Business Times that the suite "continues to be in high demand for weddings, special events and high-profile guests."

This may be true. But you could also argue that if there was that much demand for the penthouse, the hotel wouldn't close it for a renovation right now. Seems equally likely that business for the penthouse is slow so the company is using the downtime to spruce the place up.
