Union workers call for social services fundingTuesday, August 18, 2009 (08-18) 13:01 PDT Las Vegas, NV (AP) -- Union workers are calling for Clark County elected officials to postpone construction projects and spend money instead on children, the elderly and the poor. More NewsLeaders of Service Employees International Union Local 1107 say the county can avoid cuts in social programs by diverting money from a capital improvement reserve that they say has some $479 million available to cover operating costs. Clark County union workers marched at a rally Monday outside the county government center. Union officials say the fund could make up for nearly $14 million lost by social services and family services. Clark County Chief Administrative Officer Don Burnette says money could be transferred from the fund and some projects could be postponed. But he says the union's estimates on how much money is available are out of date. ___ Information from: Las Vegas Review-Journal, www.lvrj.com |
